I really enjoyed mixing this song! The tracks are really nice and clear. It was kind of a tough mix for me to do, but I think that it turned out great. I'm just thankful for the opportunity to mix a professionally recorded song.
I did a lot to this mix and used a lot of different plugins from 1 to 5 on each track as I felt it needed it.
Starting with the drums:
1.) First, I used compression to tighten up and even out the drums a little: I used CLA-76 on the kick stems, and SSLComp on the snare and hat stems. Compression was very effective on the beat track, which I did have a lot of problems with.
2.) Then of course I used EQ to help clear things up.
3.) I used parallel compression on the drums to really bring up that low end in the kick and to make that low end of the song punch through in an impactful way.
Now for the instruments, in which I did even more things to:
1.) I used SSLComp, RCompressor, and RBass on Subphatty1 and 2. That really helped these too tracks punch through the mix.
2.) I used REQ pretty much all over the place on each track for the instruments and in some cases I used more than one EQ to try and really tune some of the instruments.
3.) For the guitars I used C4 multi band compressor, of course REQ, and RDeEsser to catch some of that bite on the guitars.
4.) For the pBridgeBass, I used SSLComp, C4, RBass and REQ in that order. It really turned out awesome.
5.) To keep from making this too long winded, for the rest of the tracks I again used REQ (it's my favorite right now), C4 multi band compressor, CLA-76, and V-comp in a few areas where I felt it needed it.
The vocals:
1.) For the lead vocal, I used 3 REQ plugins, CLA-76, and C4. It really made it awesome, especially at the beginning of the song. I also automated delay on the Lead vocal with H-Delay. It's a little subtle, but it's a nice touch.
2.) I tried to keep things simple with these since there were so many of them. So what I basically did was pan the vocals by each section and used CLA-76 compression on each individual vocal to help give them some control.
Effects:
1.) I only compressed with RCompressor and C4, then I used REQ to help tune them.
Additional information:
1.) I used ProTools 10
2.) I added some reverb to the vocals and the whole mix to create space. I used RVerb and IR1 efficient.
3.) Last, I sent the drum, instrument, vocal, and effect tracks to their on particular bus so that I could have subgroups.
I really enjoyed mixing this song and I'm about to listen to it a little more, then upload it. I feel like I've done well.
If I could have done one more thing to the mix though, I would have pulled the BGV's back a little in certain areas. I kind of want to post my mix here too since everyone else is doing so.
