I really enjoyed mixing this track. I especially liked working with the mix of acoustic and electronic elements. I mixed ITB with Waves, Slate and Softube plugins. I actually used Softube's EQ on a few of my busses and their stereo Passive EQ on my master. I think it's their version of a Massive Passive, and it does a great job of adding something extra to a mix. I also used a lot of the Waves IR verb for ambience on the drums, H-Delay on the vocals and synths, and Wave's Blue 76 and LA3A on vocals and gtrs. I still have a few last minute tweaks before posting, but I'm hoping to post my mix here in the next hr or so.

Here is my attempt, I wish I could have spent more time with it but here it goes. Great learning and practice.

Cheers!

A big thanks to the pureMix team for providing these great tracks and to Sonnox and HomeRecording for sponsoring the event.

I Mixed using PT11 summed to a 2-BUSLT with plugins from UAD and Waves. Enjoy listening!

Hello everyone!
Thank you to pureMix for this great production, love the arrangement! I bet everyone here had lot of fun mixing this song.

I worked totally ITB in PT10 using:
- UAD plugins
- PluginAlliance plugins (Elysia, MaagEQ4, SPL Transient Design, SPL PassEQ)
- Some PT stock plugins

If you're interested, here you can listen to my version.

This was a lot of fun. As always never enough time and wish I could have done more but this was an awesome exercise.

I mixed this in Pro Tools 11. Since it was a sonnox sponsored contest I downloaded the Essential Bundle and did most processing with that set of plugins. Very nice stuff. I also used Waves H-delay, TrueVerb, and Kramer Tape.

As far as approach, I listened to the Itunes release version a few times before I started just to learn the song, then once I started the project, never listened to it again till I was just about done. It was very interesting to see the difference when I was finished because if you compare you can hear what things I gravitate towards. Big Lush vocals was the big thing to me.

Enjoy and good luck.

Hi,

Here is my attempt:

h t t p://soundcloud.com/ronbcs/20140523-zelab-mixing-contest-amber-skye-produced-by-emw-music-group (not allowed to post URLs...)
I made a big mistake by not listening to the original mix... or maybe not.
Anyway, i decided not to do until i had globally done my mix.

- A mistake because i probably lost big time listening to/analyzing each track
- not a mistake because i did it like i would have done if it had been a new mix to do in real life, and i was amazed later hearing delays where i had done the same. As in real situation, i choosed not to spend to much time on that mix.

I mainly focused on the voice(s) while i feel the original track is mixed focused on the arrangement, not the same approach.
I'm just a hobbist and i hope i didn't screwed that song :)

Thanks to the organizers who allowed us to work on real tracks, it was a pleasure!

Ron.

I really enjoyed mixing this song! The tracks are really nice and clear. It was kind of a tough mix for me to do, but I think that it turned out great. I'm just thankful for the opportunity to mix a professionally recorded song.

I did a lot to this mix and used a lot of different plugins from 1 to 5 on each track as I felt it needed it.

Starting with the drums:
1.) First, I used compression to tighten up and even out the drums a little: I used CLA-76 on the kick stems, and SSLComp on the snare and hat stems. Compression was very effective on the beat track, which I did have a lot of problems with.
2.) Then of course I used EQ to help clear things up.
3.) I used parallel compression on the drums to really bring up that low end in the kick and to make that low end of the song punch through in an impactful way.

Now for the instruments, in which I did even more things to:
1.) I used SSLComp, RCompressor, and RBass on Subphatty1 and 2. That really helped these too tracks punch through the mix.
2.) I used REQ pretty much all over the place on each track for the instruments and in some cases I used more than one EQ to try and really tune some of the instruments.
3.) For the guitars I used C4 multi band compressor, of course REQ, and RDeEsser to catch some of that bite on the guitars.
4.) For the pBridgeBass, I used SSLComp, C4, RBass and REQ in that order. It really turned out awesome.
5.) To keep from making this too long winded, for the rest of the tracks I again used REQ (it's my favorite right now), C4 multi band compressor, CLA-76, and V-comp in a few areas where I felt it needed it.

The vocals:
1.) For the lead vocal, I used 3 REQ plugins, CLA-76, and C4. It really made it awesome, especially at the beginning of the song. I also automated delay on the Lead vocal with H-Delay. It's a little subtle, but it's a nice touch.
2.) I tried to keep things simple with these since there were so many of them. So what I basically did was pan the vocals by each section and used CLA-76 compression on each individual vocal to help give them some control.

Effects:
1.) I only compressed with RCompressor and C4, then I used REQ to help tune them.

Additional information:
1.) I used ProTools 10
2.) I added some reverb to the vocals and the whole mix to create space. I used RVerb and IR1 efficient.
3.) Last, I sent the drum, instrument, vocal, and effect tracks to their on particular bus so that I could have subgroups.

I really enjoyed mixing this song and I'm about to listen to it a little more, then upload it. I feel like I've done well.

If I could have done one more thing to the mix though, I would have pulled the BGV's back a little in certain areas. I kind of want to post my mix here too since everyone else is doing so. :)

Can you imagine having to sit and listen to all these mixes? LOL

Here's my final.

Good luck to everyone - was a pleasure to mix it. Didn't get to hear them all - they simply kept piling in!

Will we get *any* comment on our tracks from Fab et al, or will it just be the top 3? Would be nice to have even a one liner per submitted track so we can get a "pros" view on what we were doing.

Agree it's the doing not the winning anyways.

Cheers all,

Rob

I had great fun mixing it!
Thanks for sharing such professional tracks!
I tried to figure out what the Artist would want the song to sound like.
Since this isnt a realistic situation, I figured that artist would want every tracks to stand out at some point.
I tried to give a room for every instruments so they can be heard.
Well! It is submitted!
Good luck to you all

Howlin

Hi everyone, I just tweaked the levels until the last minute; my mixing is from a musician's perspective: get a groove going and some stuff on top, and try to bring out the "soul" in the vocals.
I mixed it in Reaper, only stock plugs, LOTS of volume automation, using my 6' studio monitors. I hope I got the low end right. It was dificult.
Then I "mastered" the thing with my good headphones. Well, not really "mastered", I did not print an intermediate file, just tweaked the balances and the 2 bus a little more, trying to use the "not room" perspective: to be a fake "new person" doing the "fresh ears" thing.
Thanks!

Howlin, Amber Skye- NICE !

Had a ton of fun. Thanks to the all crew that put this session and competition together. I'm sure it is not so easy.

I used Pro Tools 10- 11 and kept to stock plugs except for a couple. Very cool song. I loved working with the vocals.

Good tracks, it was fun to mix. Thank you puremix team and Amber for the opportunity.

Mixed with PT11 using UAD, Sound Toys (all the free ones) and stock plug ins.

Really liked the diverse instrumentation.

In case anyone was wondering what monitoring I used.. I used Audeze LCD-2 headphones along with the Beats Pro (for bass leveling). Double checked the mix translation on Focal CMS-50s, and my macbook retina speakers, oh also apple earbuds!

Thanks Pure mix and Amber! This was fun to mix.I my have tweaked thing a little to much, but thats how you learn.

AS far as the tools go... Everthing was mixed ITB with Reaper.I used stock plugins, some stillwell stuff and also some free plugins.

Thanks and Good Luck!

For This mix, I used Logic Pro with native plugin and Steven Slate plugins. A good chance to mix a project with many tracks and apply the taste and knowledge. Very good artist too.

Cheers

I don't know the specifics, but I know it is indeed possible on Windows. RAM drives have been around since at least the DOS days. Used to be if you needed more operating system files than could fit on your boot floppy, you could have some of them zipped on the disk to save space, then have your boot scripts make a RAM drive and unzip the files into it. Of course, RAM drives were a lot smaller back in those days 'cause RAM was a lot more expensive than it is now. But these days we have so much RAM that it can be difficult to actually get use out of all of it, so using the extra for files makes sense.

Thanks Again, I did some research and found that all you need is some software, which I found from $18.00 to $70.00 and of course, more ram than you would probable normally use, and we do know that the ram specs are faster than the memory in any SSD drive. Now, you do lose anything on this drive everytime you shut down you computer, but with the right software, when you shut down, it will auto made a disc image save to your hard drive, and on start up, put that image back on the ram drive. Of course, that greatly increases start up times, but might be worth it to be able to install your DAW with all your plug-ins on the ram drive. Think I'll have some fun playing around with this. Thanks!

Just in case some of you guy might be interested, I've seen several models of 120GB SSD on sale at Newegg com for $64.99. In my opinion probable the best thing you can do for your computer, if you don't already have one.
Seems like all the mixes just keep getting better all the time, Good Job, guys!

well maybe it correctly

Hi,

Thanks to Puremix and Sonnox and for putting this on, and Amber for the great track - really wonderful songwriting, the whole piece is very well crafted. A couple things I did with my mix that were of note:

Before I started I used revoice pro to tighten up some of the chorus vocals. The originals were already really good, just made them more solidified.

Did some really small pitch correction on the harmony vocals (really small, probably not noticeable).

I was trying to go for a more dance vibe, so for the drum track, I put the high hats through a guitar FX Wah Wah pedal, which gave it some more groove and movement.

For the vibe guitars, I automated a resonant filter throughout the mix to help shape what was already happening.

For the Sub Phatty, I put distortion on it, and tried to emphasize the mid range, and time the kick side chain so it speaks on the offbeat.

There are also a few auto panner on the leads, and some other FX and automation.

Lots of fun to mix

Hi ladies and germs,

Had a lot of fun mixing this well-produced song. I'm more of a metal guy so working with this type of music was both a challenging and rewarding experience! Lots of stuff going on in the track (especially that last chorus .. phew!) so it was quite tricky to give everything its own space while still being creative with delays and other stuff.

Did this all in the box in Pro Tools 10, using primarily Pro Tools stock, Waves and UAD plugins for EQ and UAD and Massey plugins for compression. Effects were UAD, SoundToys and Waves. Had the Slate VCC set to the API setting strapped across the drums and bass just to tighten up the low end a bit. Lots of automation going on especially on the vocals, with some automated delays/reverbs. Did a tiny amount of vocal tuning and a small amount of other editing e.g. getting rid of noise etc - most of the tracks were pretty damn clean. Gd job to the producers!

For reference mixes I used the original mix by Ben + a song by Foxes (mainly for the vocal sound).

Please check out my mix (link below) - would appreciate any comments you guys can offer! Looking forward to the next mix competition from Puremix or just any mix competition in general.
