I am looking to purchase an audio interface so that my band can begin to do some recording on our own without having to purchase studio time. At the moment we have a Mac G4 that is set up for firewire with extra hard drives, etc., so the sound card is the obvious next step, but we don't want to spend a whole lot and are looking for a good deal (we got the mac for $900 canadian from a friend).

My question then is: Does anyone know of any sound cards that will allow us to record at least 8 tracks simultaneously, with high quality sound that are priced reasonably. Used is fine..I have been looking at the MOTU 828, not the mkII model but the original...any thoughts/feelings on this model? Also if anyone knows WHERE (ie websites) these things can be purchased at good prices that would be much appreciated as well.

Thanks for your help,
-Dan

i've heard a lot of good things about the motu. do a google search and read some reviews.

here's a discussion i was involved in regarding audio interfaces over at the cakewalk site: Audio Interfaces

i own the aardvark Q10. it's a great unit with 8 xlr or 1/4" inputs, 10 1/4" outputs, SPDIF in/out, with phantom power and inserts on channels 1-4. right now, it's going for about $699 at most places. check out 8thstreet, sweetwater, zzounds, or musician's friend.

hope this helps

Keep an eye on eBay for the MOTU 828. Even the 828mkII can be found for less than the $750 US MSRP.

What kind of price range are you in?

Do you already have mics/mixers/monitors?

You will find out that all this sh!t really adds up.

Delta 44 have 4in and 4 outs but they are line level signals so youll need a preamp or a mixer. Delta 44 is only 150 bucks at most places and it is pci based. Also allows you to have up to 4 in your system. so you can buy 2 delta 44's, that will have 8 in and outs, 300 bucks. It all depends on how much money you are willing to spend.

IF you do have the money for the Q10 that is a real good choice.

Motu HD 896?

You may want to consider a MOTU HD 896. You could record 8 tracks at the same time, (which is something you said was important) you can use it with either Mac or Windows, and it can record in 96k (which is great for acoustic guitar)
I have one and in fact just bought it. I will be using it on my G4 Powerbook.
Just a suggestion.....good luck with whatever you choose!
