Here is my problem. I lay down a whole track. Then when I go to punch in on certain parts it is difficult for the artists because they still hear the old track playing while they play the overdub. Is there a way to overdub without the track playing underneath it, besides doing a whole new audio track and then just moving it up? Another problem I have is when they lay down a track and its done....can you listen to it without saving it and renaming it? I have been running into the musician finishing the track and they'll want to listen and I have to save it. My harddrive is gonna be filled up with mistakes and unusable tracks. Do I have to go back and erase them off of the HD one at a time. That is a pain. Any short cuts. I'm using Vegas 3.0 getting ready to upgrade to 6.0

Yeah, this can be a pain sometimes. What I do is to just split the audio, and scrub out the bad parts. Then record the overdubs on a new track.

No, you can't listen to the audio without saving it. But if you know it's a bad take after listening to it, delete it. Just make sure to flash the media pool.
