Go to noisevault.com and grab some pre or comp or eq impulses and run them in SIR

as you say above, not only can they not for the most part model vintage gear, they actually many times cannot even tranfer over already existing COMPUTER code from hardware

THAT is how pathetic the plugin and recording software scene is for the most part

you want it better? go to #musicdsp on EFnet and add your voice to those who stuff to work

After reading pipelineaudio's posts #19 & #21, I'm a bit confused... :confused: In #19 it reads like you think that plugs can emulate their hardware counterparts, but the way I'm understanding #21, you don't think so...

So, bottom line: Does the URS or UAD-1 Pultec plugs sound close to a hardware version of the Pultec?
 
the behaviour is right, for most of these plugs in the UAD-1

I'm on record as taking exception to their EMT sounding ANYTHING like a plate reverb, but aside from that one....

The sound is right on the plugs as well, to a point. There is a hi frequency munch on the plugs, maybe not all but certainly the pultec, one of my favorite DSP guys attributes it to a poor use of an anti-aliasing filter, and says its worse on the pultec because it up and downsamples.

Not everyone is bothered by the hi frequncy munch and many will say it doesnt exist. If you get a chance to run the thing, see if you like it, and dont worry whether the munch is there or not

Most of my woes with the UAD-1 are their half assed DX drivers and their silly dongle on a card implementation that leads to so many buffer errors and such for even so many VST users

Your post cleared up a lot for me.. thanks. The dongle and card is one of the biggest reasons I've held off on buying this stuff... And on top of the hardware addition and dongle, I'll be using them with ProTools, so they'll have to be wrapped in the VST to RTAS adapter... I'm sure I'll eventually get it, I just seem to be doing way more research on this one that I have many of the plugs I've bought... I just hate dongles...and I'm not really crazy about adding the hardware to my machine... but like I said, I'm sure I'll be over it in a few days and get it anyways... We'll see..

What dongle? The UAD cards do not have a dongle. You need the hardware for it to work anyways (the pci card).

My bad... Got carried away typing... Dongle was just on my mind.. I hate those things... Used to have one on a piece of vinyl cutting software I owned... Swore then, never again...

You think you REALLY need that ChromaKey DSP to run these plugs?

I thought theres a cardless version for pt

A dongle doesn't keep your CPU from getting loaded with plugs. With my two cards, I can run something like a dozen Pultecs and of course that's zero CPU use.

This is a huge benefit. I can run 8-12 plugs or so from the UAD card and still run a bunch of other CPU hungry plugs like Voxengo Soniformer or Gliss EQ at the same time (Voxengo plugs are great too, btw).

Out of every piece of gear I've ever bought, it wins the "best bang for the buck" award by far.
