Pulling out the frets...

I was wondering if anyone could tell me how I could pull out the frets on my fender jazz bass. I know, I know.... I'm sure you're asking why I would want to do that, but the bass isn't all that nice to begin with. I bought it for $230 about four years ago and I barely ever play it. I met this guy that pulled out the frets on his crappy bass and I liked how it sounded. I just want to experiment with it. If you could help me out, I'd appreciate it.

One night I just used my swiss army knife, put the blade between the frets and board and lifted them all out. It went fairly ok, although I'm sure it is not the prefered way to do it.
It was a spontaneous action that night. I just felt like ripping them out. Pretty stupid, it was at that time the only bass that I owned and I played it a lot.
