Benny,

Thanks for the great comments, both here in the thread and the document! The crunch guitar hits on the beginning I did are from the song, I just did a submix at the point where the hit was and extracted it... I couldn't get the rest of the song to sound that fat because it was just so cluttered with parts that needed to be there... :) I agree with you on it; I really wish I'd been able to keep that kind of punch throughout, but it would have meant sacrificing other voices that I wanted to hear.

I think that I got too carried away playing with gimmicks for your taste, and that's where some of your commentary comes from; but that's totally cool, I respect and value the opinion! I was having a blast, and I learned an absolute TON.

I'd like to second this. I haven't read all the way through it yet, but appreciate the comments. Hopefully, it will make my next attempt better.... :D

Ahh, i see :o .

Carry on then! :D

Thanks guys, and no i am not in Finland:D

As far as the comp goes, I like slapping them on loud headphone mixes to keep any transients from blowing little Sony drivers.....

i'm glad you did get carried away. i think it's the best way people learn how to do the effects they hear in so many songs. then as you progress in skill you learn to pick and choose from your toolbox of "gimmicks" to help drive the song. :)

It's funny; working in such a departed genre from my norm, it was like haveing to re-learn EVERYTHING; the sensibilities are so different! :)

What? NUmber 8? Just one point better from PMC11
Thanks for the game guys, like it. Can't wait to grasp PMc13

By the way, one minor technical rebuttal:

But the crunch guitar hits at the beginning rock! I don’t know if you stole them from some other song or recorded them yourself, but THAT’S how I like metal guitars to sound! But the transition between that and the rest of the song doesn’t really fit. Probably has to do with because they are in different keys.

No, they aren't: Dm is the vi chord in F, and Dm is the relative minor key of F major. Neener. :D Especially because the hits came from within the song, not externally. I didn't want to violate the integrity of the piece by changing samples or re-recording anything. But MAN, was I tempted to redo the entire bass part... *evil grin*

lol, I didn't exactly have a keyboard next to me or anything. maybe it was just weird hearing it go vi-iii then. This is just a iii-vi-ii-V progression in the original 4 bars, isn't it? Maybe it's just going from vi-iii when the rest of the intro goes to a ii after a vi.......?? God I need to bone up on my music theory. lol

Although it probably would have just worked better if you let the guitars/synth trail into the next part. Maybe it was just the quick, arbupt change between sections. At least I was right in it sounds a little weird :p

Congratulations to the winners! And to the administrators of it. :)
I appreciate the opportunity to try this. It was a hell of a learning experience since I'm not an engineer at all. I've never tried anything this large here at home before and my little PC barely handled all that data so I let it go after the first mix. I'm happy that it at least made it on the page. :D

I'm surprised nobody pegged the influence on the beginning. Think "Eye of the Tiger", and does it still sound weird? :) I wanted that saw wave crescendo to really punctuate the change; I wasn't going for smooth, I was going for "bursting through a brick wall".. :D :D

aHA! I know what it is...there is a slight gap inbetween your intro and the original one. I hadn't zoomed in on the wave form when first listening...but there is about an 874 sample gap! Remove that, add a nice 236 sample crossfade there....and it sounds way better! :D :p ;) :)

I just found out I came in 5th. I never submitted a real mix, I got busy and begged out of the contest. I guess no one saw that post.

There is no EQ on the guitar or bass and the vocals have the wrong voice in the lead.

Thanks, this is flattering.

Nice big post there Benny. Alot of real good points in there especially about automation, probably one of the most crucial parts of mixing to bring life into a mix.
Have to disagree on the whisper part. you said it should be real quiet, but I think it sounds good loud, but thats just what I think and I take alot of influnece from Deftones when its comes to mixing and they like the heavily compressed sound so all the whispers and breathing is loud.

Eck

Thank you very much for the comments in the .doc :)
The vox in my first mix were a good bit quieter! good job I turned them up eh. :)
I wanted to keep the guitars with alot of power to drive the song at parts and for the hook, let the vocals take over. This I thought, brought more attention to the hook.

Dont beleive I came 4th from a blind mix! im chuffed.
I added the FXs to the tracks seperately as I cant run effects in real time with tracks playing. So in effect what i was doing really was soloing each track rendering the FXs I though would work in the mix for that single track and then bringing it into a Montage in Wavelab!
Wish I could mix properly. :(
Cheers.
Eck

And thanks to Finster.
yes im gonna stop posting now. :)

thank you
the whisper part...again...is more of personal opinion. I just heard it as a whisper in a part of the music where every other instrument dies out....and then all of a sudden everything comes back in loud again! So I felt a big contrast in volume was needed. Not to mention it really hurts my ears listening to a lot of the songs where the whisper jumped up the volume by +9dBFS.

nice job though, even if you had to mix it in a round-about way :)
