I made a few quick changes and added just a couple of automated sections. I haven't had too much time in the studio lately to put much into this one but I have at least invested an hour on it now. Half that time was spent just sorting out the tracks and coming up with a plan of which to use and which to not use. Hopefully this week I can start listening to some of the other mixes from you guys:)

Nice! You used some guitars I didn't... You have a much drier, smaller room patina than I chose too; you seem to have left the vocals well enough alone, I went nutsoid playing with them; I went for a more sinister, heavier, overbearing sound... My only criticism really, aand it's a minor one, is that the drums lack some bottom (but this aint your fault, the acquisition sucked canal water, I bet NOBODY gets good punch out of them!). Other than that; I think it's mostly subjective choices that are merely different than my own, not necessarily "worse". Very clean though, I think every instrument had it's place in the field, and with a recording this dense, that was a challenge!!

Wow, this is a different sound, you went right for Power Pop, and nailed it! You've got the cleanest drums by far so far!! (like everyones, they lack bottom, but not your fault...) You emphasized the bass vocals more than anyone so far, I used that part a lot too. I liked it. Did you double the snare, or just use all three of them?

Am I the only one that went for the radio mix, omitting the F-bomb? :D

my stab

sounds better than some, worse than others. these tracks consumed too much time!!! its addictive :)

Thanks! I used the 57 and bottom tracks + my own sample. It's mostly the sample you are hearing. I would say that the vocals are the hardest part. Too much stuff going on :)

I'm back, with monitors hooked up and calibrated, so let's review!

OK, drums are awfully bright, except, oddly, the kick. You've clipped a few too many places. Otherwise, a solid mix, fix that and you'll be alright.

I like the low end, generally. The drums are nice but again bright (seems to be a universal theme). The vocals are out of control though, need to make some decisions there. Guitars are buried deeply and bass is too prominent (how it pains me to say that!) in the guitars' frequency range. Sounds almost like a Geddy Lee tone, but he had to cover for Lifeson's wanking. Gotta make room . . .

I'm gonna take a stab at it. I have never mixed this style of music before so there will undoubtebly be some thing unliked about it. Let me know what you think.

Dog, I'll try to be Randy and not Simon, but this . . . needs a lot of work. Right now it sounds like this was recorded with one mic in the middle of the room, too close to the bass player.

Work on getting the balance back to sanity. After turning down the bass, start with the drums--the snare; it's much louder than the rest of the mix, other than some but not all of the cymbals. Get rid of the drumstick countoff, that is amateurish for this style of music.

Where are the guitars? All I can hear in some places are keys! This ain't "The Final Countdown", man! And not all the vocal tracks should be mixed at unity . . .

Get levels under control, repost, and we can talk about compression and EQ.

If anyone's got some time to kill....

Would everyone PLEASE take a moment and listen to xstatic's mix in post #371?? This is a good drum sound! All y'all are making me regret my selection of alumimum dome tweeters for my monitors . . please don't make my tinnitus worse than it is!

Hi all

Comments are very welcome

Cheers :)

Toms in the beginning are distorted.

This is a really unbalanced mix--move something to the left. This is one of the very few guitar tones I haven't liked--try cutting something in the high-mid range. A lot of other instruments are getting in the way of the cymbals - even the kick!

What happened to the low vocals at the end? I like their evil sound.

Homework for everybody who leaves in the harpsichord at the end is to listen to Landowska's recording of JS Bach's "Well Tempered Clavier". That's what they are supposed to sound like, and that was an extremely lo-fi recording.

First post ever on here, have been lurking for a long time on these great forums!

I thought this was a really cool song, first time I ever mixed something like this (being a guitar player I normally only mix 2 or 3 tracks for tracking some stuff)! I cut out the keys because I didn't really like them too much (sorry!)

Hope you guys could give me some pointers, on my attempt at mixing the song.

Final Mix

So I guess the drums are sitting good with you. How bout the vocals and other stuff? Someone commented that the vocals were too prominenet, but I am not sure that they are. I feel pretty good about the wholemix right now when I listen. Every time I listen to the vocals I hear this whole Alice in Chains thing going on. I tried really hard for a few minutes to get away from that, but it always begged me to be that way. After not being able to beat that I decided to go the opposite way. If they have that feel, why not give them that feel? :D

And tx for the compliment:)

The only comments I have about your mix are largely personal preference, which I don't score, so I'll keep 'em to myself :)
