Im just boosting the levels a little after mixing. I dont think this song really needs mastered since it is so easy to mix because of the decent tracks.

My feeling on mastering is do it if you like and you don't screw anything up. Definitely not a problem bumping levels up, but I wouldn't downgrade a mix if it was a few dB shy of peaking. I did ding somebody in #11 who had a good mix, but squashed the life out of it.

Anyone else having troubles downing the zip? The aif zip is there for sure, and downloading works also, but after the download has finished (after 1.4-2.5 hours, I tried 4 times, twice @ home and twice @ work (once with dwnload accelerator). All downlaods ended up corrupted. Zipfile cannot extract.. The first time I downed I could extract 22 of the 44 files, the three retries didn't work at all. This sucks, I'd like to join this PMC...

Any tips?

Edit! Check! Got it! Downloaded it for the 5th time (sorry for that) and extracted the zip with another (not the default windowsXP extraction option) program and it works now. Seems the newest versions of zips are not recognized in my XP versions (@ home and @ work)..

Are you using IE, or Safari?

Are you behind a corporate or university firewall?

I am using IE (WinXP SP2)

I have a SPI firewall based router that I am behind and thats it. I tried uploading an mp3 that previously worked fine and got the same error.

Two posts in two days...that's a record for me. Crap, I'm trying to keep up with this thread, but it moves fast. :)

RE: Dogman's first stab
Sounds like you're relying a little too much on the bottom snare mic. You might try throttling it back a bit to get a bit tighter crack sound that's not quite as splashy.

RE: Kainz
I'm really like the guitars. The bass feels thin. There's lots of attack, but not a lot of beef. I like the click on the kick drum, but a clicky kick and bass guitar leaves some lower end support to be desired.

I'll be standing in front of the firing squad soon when I post my first mix sometime tonight. :D

Ok, I had some time this morning to throw together a quick mix. I'm not sure I'm happy with the drum mix but basically this mix is just more for balance. Did some panning and some automation on levels and that's about it.

Finster - Nice work. I'd like to hear a bit more oomph in the low end, but that's just a personal preference. Overall, everything was pretty balanced. I'm not too big on the vocal effect, but it doesn't sound bad.

ocnor - A bit too much bottom mic on the snare. Way too much sizzle in my opinion. I think the guitars need more definition, too. That one synth comes in and they get eaten up really fast. The drums are a bit loud, too. Those vocals need some tweaking, too. :)

sine707 - Guitars are too centered in my opinion. Nicely defined, though. Vocals are a bit iffy here, too. Not bad, though.

Kainz - I think these drums need a bit more punch. Something. Vocals are a little too echo-y or something for me.

I'm sorry these reviews aren't better. I tried.

I'll be posting take 2 in a bit.

Well, I spent about an hour coming up with a decent little rough mix for ideas. This was pretty fun to mix, but I did chuck all the bottom tom mics and the 201 on the snare. All in all the song was pretty well written and arranged, and recorded well to boot. I wish the bass player hadn't dropped oput on several long sections though. Even some droning quarter notes may have helped hold those sections together with a little more thickness, but oh well.

Tear me a new one guys:D

i think i figured it out....... your software dosn't seem to accept mp3 encoded useing a variable bit rate.

i think that's it anyway.

This is cool song but I think it could use a few more tracks. Maybe put each guitar string on a separate track.:D Well it took me all morning but I came up with a rough mix for you guys to rip to shreds. All tips and comments are welcome.

Good mix. Feels like the drums are sitting on top of everything, I'l rein 'em in a bit. Nice AIC feel overall, I like it, even though I never liked AIC

Cymbals have air, but not much else does. Vocal tracks are fighting each other, try to integrate them better. Watch the levels on vocals--the screamo parts are lower than the following sung parts.

x might just be a ringer. Nothing to complain about here. OK, a little bright in places, like the snare and some of the harmony vocals. But that's some serious nitpicking.

Sorry for being thick, but what's the deadline? I'm just loading the files into my studio computer now. I haven't even heard the song yet!!

Cheers for the comment Dogman.
Yeah I listened back to the mix and noticed that the drums were too much at times.
Anyway I remixed the song and here it is.

I fixed the bass, the drums and other little tweaks here and there.

Eck

The kick is totally dominating the low end, need to get it in the pocket with the bass. Again with the bright snare--maybe it's just me that likes a cannon snare with a clicky kick. It's a formula dammit but it works!

The lead guitar is loud in places vs. the vocal, like right before the whisper, around 2:35.
