I've been lurking around this board for a long time. I think I'll have to toss my hat into the ring this time around. Hope it's not too late to enter.

I had alot of fun mixing this especially since the tracks were all recorded very well thanks to Finster. Some amount of tracks! It was a bit daunting at first but once I got going it was cool.

Anyway heres my first rough mix.

Well, Eck...it's loud. Drums are a bit overbearing for me. They kind of drown out some of the subtleties. Bring those drums down, or tame them somehow, and maybe the vocals will come out better.

Oh yeah, PMC12 at last!

And what a song ;)

This type of music is as far from my style of music as it possbily cold be! (being a jazz/blues musician myself)

But anyway I like mixing it and here is my first rought try:Kainz' PMC12 beta 1

And I must say these tracks are hands down the best redorded tracks I'v ever mixed. It is a plain joy to work with these.

Allthou I'm having some problems with the vocals and their tune(s). Also could someone (finster?) tell me if I got all those tracks like they should be? They were so numerous and not edited that I'm not so sure if I got them right :p
Don't want to start going too "deep in there" unless I'm sure I have them/the song generally right.

Oh and I didn't automate etc. anything yet.. Just really really rough one. Eg. voxes have alot(!) work to do with...
Decent mix, Kainz....way better than mine sounds at the moment.

I grabbed the files while I was at work and am gonna load them into my comp tonight. This will be my first entry into the PMC!

Cheers for the comment Dogman.
Yeah I listened back to the mix and noticed that the drums were too much at times.
Anyway I remixed the song and here it is.

I fixed the bass, the drums and other little tweaks here and there.

Geet, nice mix. Vocals are a little quiet on my end, but I can make them out. Nice on so far...
Ed

Thanks. I haven't been able to get a balance I've liked with those BG vocals. Listening now.. they are a bit quiet.

I'm in!!!! I should have a mix up in about 5 minutes... maybe 6... :)

Ok, kidding. I'm gonna push this one right to the last minute deadline. I don't have much time in my day to spend on it but I'll give it my best shot each day and after I submit my final mix and the winners are tallied up, if I don't win something I will hunt down the judges one by one and... uh... ummm....

NEVERMIND!

:) :)

Ok, my first stab....
Circle

this is pretty dry....No reverb or delay. Just a bit of eq. Pretty bass heavy, but sounded good at the time. And if you don't like it......I'm paying 7string big bucks to go on a manhunt.......

Yay, after Finster confirmed my vocals were in order (at least he didn't say they weren't hehe) I started to work with them and do some polishing with the rest of the song too. I added the toms too which were for some weird reason missing from the first one!

So here is the result: Kainz's new try

By the way.. these tracks are so well recorded that I feel I'm almost allready finished with this.. (no, this isn't still my final hehe). So please comment and enlight me if and where I'm heading into the "wrong way" :D

Wow. Damn, this song is too good. It's hard to imagine a bad mix out of this.

Anyway, Kainz I think the guitars need more bite. Too much wash on everything. And what's with the dead space at the end? Trim that.

This is gonna be ugly to judge if I have to stoop to downgrading people for excess silence  :o  :o  :o

Thanks for the comments!

Overall I feel your mix is somewhat thin, but in any means it doesn't lack the bass! :p

Mainly the things I would fix are the drums and the vocals. Try to build the "bottom" first. Use kick and bass to form it (be aware that those distorted guitars tend to go low there too, so take care of those too). Some reverb for the drums will help. Also try to get the drums more aggressive.

As for the vocals.. I found these vocals somewhat hard to mix - they aren't so well in tune with each other and don't "blend" easily. The trick to get them to sit is right use of reverb(s), EQ and delay. The task is not easy. Also they are sang by only one person(?) with same mic and in only one room. So the mic/person/room characteristics start to build up when adding more and more those tracks. In these tracks I found that in the upper mid section there is somewhat noticeable pumb (around 3-5khz). So it might be a good idea to keep an eye on that area.

Overall I think your mix is quite nice start! :)

Hmm . . . this sounds pretty 1982. Not a modern style of metal mixing. Backing vocals have balance issues. Snare is too bright, kick isn't bright enough. Cymbals all sound like chinas. Yep, 1980s :o ;)

Guitars are extremely dark too. The whisper towards the end should be a whisper, not the loudest vocal in the song.

I indeed agree with you in everything :D. If I may say, these tracks are truly a bit "too nice". If a guy with such poor mixing skills like me comes up with this in like.. uhm 6 hours - you just have to wonder..... heh...

Ups, didn't notice the silence.. Have to trim it out. Sorry folks :o

Damn I think we took down NL5, I can't get this. Maybe I can host some of the mixes to take the burden off? Dunno what my bandwidth limits are though

Thanks for the listen, Kainz and mshilarious. With all these tracks, it's hard to choose a particular sound. I took out a few vocals tracks, but left the remaining pretty centered, and they did build up pretty fast. And those drums....I was so worried about them taking too much of the sound, and did pretty much ruin them.
Thanks for the critiques, guys. Gives me something to think about, and hopefully some better direction.
