One thing that pisses me off, Epiphone doesn't build an Elitist version of the SG, except a bass, so they only approach the standard level.

Richie

Richie-Epi does make an Elitist version of the SG referred to as the Epiphone Elitist 1961 SG Standard Electric Guitar and I am the proud owner of one. Musician's Friend has them for $579.99. The fit, feel, and finish are top notch IMHO.

Sure do

My local music store Dave Phillips in Phillipsburg, NJ has them in about 4 different finishes, $449!! I couldn't believe it, they are fantastic guitars!!

At $449 you'd be hard pressed to find a better value in a guitar. I agree, they are fantastic guitars.

That's intreresting, because I went to Epiphone's website looking for an elitist SG as a reference point, and didn't find it listed at all. Either it is now discontinued, or they need to update their website. Thanks for the heads-up- Richie

From what I have read on Epiphone bulletin boards, the Elitist SGs have been discontinued. The entire Elitist line seems to be slowly disappearing.

I bought the last new (non blem) Elitist SG that Musician's Friend had (at least they said they weren't getting any more) and I love it. I was very apprehensive about buying a guitar online, but it worked out.

A friend has a regular Epiphone SG and it is a toy in comparison. The Elitists are serious. I've played a few Elitist LP Standard Plus guitars and I would say that they're better than some Gibson LP Standards, and not as good as others. If I had a lot of cash, I'd look for the best Gibson I could find, but the Elitist is a great value.

To the original question, it's really up to your ears to decide. I wouldn't buy a guitar just because others say it fits the style you're into. I like to go to the music stores and rifle through a bunch of guitars to get a bearing. This can be extremely tedious at a place like GC where half the guitars are set up terribly and won't stay in tune, but if you go to a decent store you can really make a good comparison. I had a great time doing the above tests with an Elitist and a bunch of well set up Les Pauls. I usually even play the same songs on each one to make a good comparison. If you have original material, play that.

With all the online shopping options, it's easy to forget that the best way to shop for a guitar is to pick them up and play them. Usually one will grab you.

Hey guys thanks for the replys!

Does anyone have a opinion about the STandard Epi SG? You know with set neck and the trap inlays?

Its been years since I played one and I didnt like that one then but saw that they make a black finished one. I was just wondering if quality control is better now or what?

At the price they are I could get two(main and backup), and change pickups as well.

Any pickup recomendations?

Thanks again

I believe you're referring to the G400 which is a good guitar for the money. I would replace the PUP's with a Classic 57 Plus in the bridge position and a Classic 57 in the neck position. That is not to say that the standard PUP's in the G400 are bad, it's just that the Classics will make it sound a whole lot better. I replaced the PUP's in my Epi Les Paul Custom with the Classics and the sound went from good to awesome. :)

My vote is PRS- yeah more $$$ but they hold their value (and tuning)

The bolt-on's are a bit "brighter" tone wise, but I personally like the setnecks (I play a C24.... owned a McCarty, a 22, and a HB1... like the 24 more)

10 tops don't sound any better, but from a resale perspective... way to go

I gigged a CE22 for about 5 years. Great guitar, very versatile for me. But after I started buying SGs I never wanted to play it again. Nothing gets the raw grit sound that a SG does. I have several now, from late 60's models to nearly new models, and am a huge fan. I don't like the Epis at all, though, cause I don't like the '61 style neck joint, which is what the Epi uses. They also tend to be consistantly neck heavy. Many people attribute neck heaviness to SGs when, in fact, they only have experience with Epis. A GOOD Gibson SG is well balanced. Out of my 5, only 1 is slightly neck heavy. A good leather strap fixes that problem.

You've got to play them, cause the guitars are worlds apart. Ive owned 2 other PRSi since then, but always reach for my SG over those or my Les Pauls, or anything else. Just personal preference. I prefer a laquered guitar over plastic poly finishes, and the sound and feel of the SG suits me best.

I've got a 2005 Gibson SG Platinum. It's not the gay chrome one, it's a black body. They didn't make a lot with the black body. It's got an ebony neck, and I absolutely love it. The distortion is simply incredible, although the clean is a little lacking compared to the SG standards. Reguardless, I was extremely impressed with the quality of the 2005's, or what I have played with. I vote Gibson SG.

Yes, one of my SGs is a Classic. Awesome P-90 guitar. Sounds great and feels great, especially for an SG fan like me! I think its a good deal at MF's sale price. Not as much at their "normal" price.
