I'm using ProTracks with a Soundblaster sound card in my computer. I'm only recording "audio" through the line in, no midi. When I try to record additional tracks, the new track also records the previous material along with the new stuff. Any ideas how to monitor the previous track without also recording it on the new track? Thanks for any help.

Go to the mixer on the Audio HQ of your Soundblaster and select the recording device as 'line in'.

Based on your description it seems to be set as 'What U Hear', and this way you'll record anything that is playing (even from other programs, windows sounds, etc.).

Just change it.

You've got a loop somewhere.

Do you have a What you hear is what you get type monitorring feature with the Soundblaster software? Turn it off.

Check your settings in the speaker icon in the taskbar and make sure only what you want to record is selected.

If that doesn't work, tell us more about your configuration -- how you set up the track and the computer PC/sound card etc.

The Soundbalaster HQ is set to line in. I recorded drums on a Tascam four track, then recorded them to tracks one and two through the line in. This worked really well and sounded good. I then tried to record guitar on track 3 using a DigiTech RP50 through the line in of the sound card while listening to the drumtrack and guitar sound through the computer speakers. Thats when I heard it was picking up both scources. The drums became very loud and somewhat distorted. Also, there is no "speaker" icon in my tool bar. I guess allI need to do is figure out how to monitor what I've already recorded while recording new stuff. ( Like on a 4 track). Thanks again for trying to help.

Sorry - I have given you a bum steer. I think it's in the routing on your board.

Do you have some way to seperate out what you hear versus what you record? I am not familiar with the Tascam - do you have PFL send, or a different means of routing the sound through the cans compared to what goes to the outputs of the mixer?

Thats what I need to have explained to me. How can I monitor other tracks already recorded while recording new parts without bouncing them to the new track using ProTracks? I use the Soundblaster line in for all audio. Then I use a digitechRP50 to put down guitar ideas. Both parts are coming out of my computer speakers at the same time while recording. I'm used to the tape 4tracks that allow you to "cue" what you have recorded without re recording the earlier tracks. On the Tascam 424, all I needed to do was make sure the line source was not on "tape" setting to avoid bouncing down. I guess I just need someone to explain how to keep the previous tracks from being routed to the new track I'm recording. Thanks again for any help!!!!

As long as it's a SB, your recording source should be set to "Line In", not "What U Hear". But since you've checked that, that should be OK.

The other point is that no signal going out of the computer is to be connected to equipment that's connected to the input of the computer (if you don't know what you're doing, this is the easiest explanation).

If it's not any of the above, then there's something fishy going on...
