I'm going to get a pair of KRK Rockit monitors or the Tannoy Proto J's. Musicians friend has the deal on both with a Haffler 1100 amp for under $400. My question is which one is better?
I'm doing modern hard rock/ cakewalk/ audiophile 2496. The room is about 13'x15'
thanx,

ive never heard the proto js but i have heard the krk monitors and i didnt like them. picking monitors is a very subjective topic since we all have our own tastes and preferences. some people swear by their yamaha ns10s but others (including me) cannot stand their mid range harshness. others swear by tannoys, meyers ect....
ultimately, you'll have to a/b them to see which one you like better. me? i chose event 20/20s

hope this helps:)

If they are harsh do something about it...duh. thats what mastering is all about. Most commercial cds done well dont sound harsh with them.

you'll find that those arent used to mix or master commercial cds, more often than not, they'll merely used as a reference. theory is that if they sound good on the ns10s theyll sound good anything, simply because its damn near impossible to get anything to sound good on them.
if you like the ns10s harshness and the accompanying ear fatigue that follows by all means get them.....

Ive listened to ns10s for hours and hours on end and never experinced ear fatigue. I guess Im missing out on something.

But theres no myth here my mixes that sound good on my ns10s sound good on all the other systems i have. and I have 5 from highend home theatre equipment to my wifes cd boombox. and of course the cd players in our cars.

the right tools for the right job.

The Proto J's are not shielded, so since your using these in a pc based recording set up, youll will most likely get some interference. I don't know about the KrK's. I got the Yorkvilles YSM-1i for a little about $220, that leaves a couple hundred for a power amp...

Peace,
Dennis
