I was gonna tryout the "Protools free" program because ....well,... it's free but I've heard that it's not that great for audio. Can anyone elaborate?

I was gonna use it with a Delta 1010 soundcard that I saw on www.silicondirect.com and maybe pick up the Octane Preamp too with an Apex 460 condenser mic.

I'm Canadian and Silicon Direct seems to have great pricing on m-audio stuff up here.

Does this sound like it will work nicely?

before you make major decisions demo the new magix music studio 2005
at magix.de and powertracks at pgmusic.com(29 bucks.)
both great and i have both and love them.
all you need.

Pro Tools FREE doesn't work on XP, 2000, etc. As an idea, it's a good one, a free digital 8-track. In reality, it never really worked out the way they hoped it would. Pro Tools LE (the version that comes with Digidesign hardware) is actually a really good program, but you wouldn't know it from using FREE.

rui - why are you so hung up on pt free ?
what do you perceive it will do for you ?
i gave you 2 great multitrack pkges which you will
be able to do great songs in cheaply with something like a decent sound card and you wont be limited to 8 tracks.

Well ...I'm hung on the protools for now cuz it's "free" and the one you "gave" me is $29.99. I really appreciate the suggestion and I will check those out when I get a chance.

Any cash I can save right away would be great as I just blew over $5000 on gear with my monitors, mics, new PC preamps, delta 1010 etc. I would mind letting my wallet cool off a bit.

Get Kristal. It's free, works with modern OSes, and runs VST plugins (not instruments). Not the best automation and a quirky program, but stable, sounds good, and works. Did I mention it's free? A search on the web will find it for you.

Kristal all the way for a freebie! Besides PT free version only runs on 98 and ME. If you can spend a little extra cash, try n-track studio. It's very affordable and best bang for your buck.
