Adam

Some metal guys use SS amps. I think one or both of the guys in Dying Fetus use SS Ampegs.

Also, anyone you see out there using a Roland Jazz Chorus.

i think most bass players use Solid state.

think: ampeg svt, most GK amps. i think ampeg makes a tube preamp-ed bass rig, but thats about it.

I think that Jimmy Page used solid state amps back in the day.

SVT = "Super Valve Technology"

I think you'll find that most any Ampeg SVT branded head is going to be tubed, at least in the preamp section. The exceptions are those in the "Classic" series, which really aren't much more than the guts of some of their SS rackmounted amps put into the classic SVT-style heads. For example, the B2R rackmount and SVT-350 are identical. True vintage SVT heads, as well as the current Pro series heads are all going to be tubed, as far as I can tell.

all of the modern ones, except one, are tube in the preamp only. Poweramp section is MOSFET ciruitry.

so a tube preamp makes the amp a tube amp? well, not in my book, thats for sure.

a tube amp is an ALL tube amp. tube preamps and solid state poweramps make it a hybrid, i believe.

and Jimmy Page didnt play a solid state amp.

No more than the MOSFET power amp makes it a solid state amp.

If it makes it a hybrid then why did you say its a solid state?

By the way, I did say that most of them are tube in the preamp only.

From the Ampeg Website:http://ampeg.com/products/classic_series_heads/svt1000.html
"The SVT-1000 uses solid-state MOSFET technology delivering the most tube-like feel of anything in its class. The optocoupler limiter circuit prevents power amp distortion, no matter how loudly you play."

Thanks. Yes i know you said they are mostly tube preamps, i was just restating.

furthermore, also from the website:
http://ampeg.com/products/classic_series_heads/svt1000.html

Dimensions: 24 x 11.75 x 14
Weight: 57 Pounds
Balanced Line Out: Yes
Driver Tubes: n/a
Effects Loop: Yes
Graphic EQ: Yes
Mid Tone Control: Style/Ultra Mid
Power Amp (Tube or MOSFET): MOSFET
Preamp (Tube or Solid State): SS

RMS Power Output (2 ohms): n/a
RMS Power Output (4 ohms): 1350
RMS Power Output (8 ohms): 840
Tone Controls: 3 band
Ultra Low/High Boosts: No

So i think that makes the SVT-1000 a SOLID STATE AMP.

only the SVT-CL is a tube amp. its the only one with a tube preamp of the SVT line, which i didnt know.

about 50% of all jazz players use a (solid state) roland jazz chorus.

i'd bet that jazz players use solid state, the clean of a solid state is really much clearer than on a tube.

not to say i want to go back to solid state or anything..

...and I think the story goes that he hated them so much that after he got the money, he bought new amps and left the old ones where they were. :D

jonny greenwood of radiohead uses a fender deluxe 85 for his distorted guitar sound.

.... and isnt that a tube amp, buddy?

Frank Gambale is using a Carvin TN100/DCM600 solid state preamp and power amp.
