so pretty much the only reason for a patchbay is to make things more convientient .. correct... make it so you dont have to go behind the rack all the time??

well if so ..... and if not

i have a Tascam FW-1804 interface and it has two 1/4" outputs (left and right) so lets say i have a track on my computer that is already recorded and i want to EQ it with a EQ in my rack ... so what i could do is take those outputs and take them into the EQ and then back into a recording input on the interface... understand ?? :D so it would be INTERFACE (OUTS) > EQ (INS) > EQ (OUTS) > INTERFACE (INS) - and then i would re record the track with the new EQ.

so what i could do with a patchbay is have the interface outputs (left and right) go into the back of the patchbays 1 and 2 bays and then it would transfer to the front so that i could easly change things without even leaving my chair ... is this correct

so when i wanted my monitors plugged in id have the monitor cables left and right plug into bays 1 and 2 and then when i wanted to run it through the EQ .. or anything like that...

if you can figure this whole message out i thank you in advance !!!!

Uhmm you answered most of your own questions.

IMHO If you only have a couple of outboard pieces and you can dedicate a few I/O's on the soundcard you can get away with not having a patchbay for a while.

If you can figure my post out you're welcome. :D

haah yeah but i mean you could just use the patchbay to make things convenient and so you wouldnt have to go behind the rack or anything

pretty much this thread is still for me to try to understand how to use a patch bay to the best of advantage

Behringer PX3000 Balanced 48 Point Patchbay

Like 50 bucks. They have cheaper versions; I've never tried them but they get decent reviews.

Yes and no depending on what you select on the top. Patchbays have differant modes of operation. (And I'm sure I may get some of this wrong but I'll try my best to explain.)

Normalled

Half Normalled

Open or Thru

Normalled means that the patchbay will pass the signal as if was hooked up normally without a patchbay until you plug something in the front TOP or BOTTOM ROW which breaks the signal.

Half Normalled means that the patchbay will pass the signal as if was hooked up normally without a patchbay until you plug something in the front which breaks the signal only on the BOTTOM ROW the TOP ROW carries a copy of that signal.

Open or Thru if I'm remembering correctly means there is no signal there until it is patched. Like an outboard effects processor would be an example.

This should clear up alot for you...
