Program Crash

Is there a computer music web site that will give me a general idea how I should set Ram and page file size and optimise for music production.
I"m using SX3 and I'm having a problem recording the last audio track in a song. CPU usage is 80% and the program is freezing when it tries to process the last recorded segment.
I have 3 Gigs of Ram so it should be enough to cope with most projects.
In virtual mem I have 2048 MB allocated to 'Initial size' and 2048 MB allocated to 'Maiximum Size'.
I'm running XP Pro.

Hey man
It doesnt sound like ram. Its your CPU.
In your case i would mix down some of the tracks so theres less stress on the CPU and
try and finish your last track.
And in the long run youl need a better cpu, dual or quad amd or intel.

You're probably running too many real-time plugs at once. Use the online help in Cubase to look up either the "track lock" or "track freeze" function - I forget which it's called in Cubase. This will allow you to run as many plugs as your little heart desires through non-destructive pre-rendering of the tracks you are not currently working on, and without having to actually destructively hard-render any tracks.

It's a good idea to get used to using the freeze function for other reasons, too; it helps one keep track of just what tracks they're working on and where they left off when they last saved the project, and can be a game saver in those instances when one otherwise would accidentally edit the wrong track and not discover it until too late in the undo process.

Hi Guys.
I really didn't want to hear that about my CPU but I have come to the conclusion your right. I have about 20 tracks of audio and each with an 'Insert' Reverb and EQ so I think that's what is maxing the CPU out. I know I should be using 'Send' effects and I will look at other ways of lowering CPU usage.
My computer is an AMD Athlon XP 2400+, 2.00GHZ.
I might have to talk to Santa.

It isn't your CPU, it's your work habits. Use the track freeze feature - that's what it's there for - and your CPU usage will not be a problem. Just a few years ago I used to work 20-25 tracks of 24-bit audio with plugs on a 450MHz Pentium III with 384MB of memory, and never had a CPU problem. I actually still have that machine as a secondary backup to get some work done if I'm busy using my main PC rendering videos or something.

Sure, you can get a faster CPU, but if you don't keep your DAW workdesk clean as you go along, you'll wake up one morning sooner than later to find out that you're maxing your new CPU out all over again.
