Do you use loops? sometimes

If you answered yes, are these mainly drum loops or other types as well? Mainly drum loops or other types (please specify).
---- I never use drum loops.. the few times I do use loops, its either a single instrument and I add parts to it, or once in a while I'll loop the main part of a song with entire instrumentation and just throw some drums over it.

Do you use a software or hardware sequencer? Software or hardware.
--- both...

Which one specifically? Name of sequencer.
--- first I just used the sequencer on my Roland keyboard.. I've been using Reason now for about 4 months. And I just got an ASR-10, which will probably be my main tool now, being that Reason has no midi out and I cant use external modules with it, and I cant figure out how to turn the patch selection off on software sequencers like cubase, sonar, logic, magix.

Do you use a software or hardware sampler? Software or hardware.
--- both...

Which one specifically? Name of sampler.
---started with Reason, but I've got the ASR now. I'll still continue to use Reason tho.

What is your main source of sounds? Samples, modules, sound fonts, synthesizers.
---- Samples and modules.

Do you create your own sounds or mainly use presets or premade samples? Original sounds always, sometimes or never.
--- I havent really experimented with editing presets on my keyboard... I should, I'm just lazy

What is your single most favorite piece of gear that you own currently and why? Name of gear and reasoning.
--- Well I just got my ASR and havent started sampling or made a beat on it yet, so I cant say its my favorite yet.... which would leave it to my Roland JX-305 board.

How much money (approximately) have you spent on gear since you got started? Quote approximate dollar amount.
--- just over $3000, including my drum set, bass guitar, turntables & mixer, monitors.

EXPERIENCE SECTION:

How long have you been producing? # of years.
---I made my first beat 3 years ago, I really didnt know what the hell I was doing tho, I mainly just experimented with different percussion presets in my keyboard. My beats then were in several different keys.... .until I started taking piano lessons and theory.... so I've stepped it up within the past year and a half or so.

What musical training have you had if any? Site type of training and where.
--- classical percussion lessons- 6 years in middle & high school. about 5 months of jazz drum set lessons. 1 year of music theory in high school. On my 3rd semester of both written and aural theory now at Temple University.
Had about 5 months of jazz piano lessons privately, then 2 semesters of classical lessons in college, and now I'm taking a jazz piano class at Temple.

Can you actually play the keyboard? Yes, no, kind of.
---Yes.

Can you play any musical instruments? Name other instruments.
--- Drums. soon to be electric bass

What is the current highlight of your production career and why? Name event and reason.
--- no credentials yet, just some tight beats that have yet to be unleashed.

How many tracks (approximately) would you say you make per year? Quote approximate # of tracks.
--- varies, average of 40-50 maybe. A lot never get finished tho.

How much money (approximately) have you made producing? Quote approximate dollar amount.
---- $000,000. That will be changing soon tho.

What is this for?

I wanted to tell you fellas after I got all the data, but since you asked you have the right to know. I'll give you the short version.

My studio is located in the NACC (Niagara Arts and Cultural Center) and has been for the last year. Mainly the building is used as a community center where people take music/art lessons, have meetings, go to the art museum and occasionally they will have live music performances. Basically, all the tenants there teach some sort of lesson or hold some sort of group. I am the exception.

They have been twisting my arm for the past few months to start up some sort of class. I've been putting it off, telling them I would do a computer class or something. Well the heat is on and I have to put a class together. I was hanging out at the local Guitar Center recently talking with some buddies who work there and we got to talking about what class I could hold. As they know, I used to give drum lessons, but I don't currently have a drum set so that didn't seem to possible. I could do computers but then I would have to give everyone a workstation. Production came up, that I can do.

Basically, I don't consider myself a great producer or musician but I do know alot about the technical aspects of production. I could teach people how to make a track from start to finish and even how to record vocals over top. I figure I can even get into basic music theory if necessary.

I'm asking you guys these questions so I can:
a). Find out the most common gear used, acquire it and train people on it.
b). Find out the most common production methods and teach those.
c). Decide whether to veer more towards hardware or software.
d). Give statistical data on what other producers are spending on equipment and how much of that they are seeing back.
e). Find out what knowledge is necessary for beat making.

These are the main reasons, although I did through in a few wild cards just to see what you fellas had to say. I was also hoping this post could help newbies and other board members by consolidating a lot of information.

I appreciate the responses already fellas they definitely help. Please keep them coming, I need at least a few more.
