Problems recording through my computer

ok I just got this program called Magix Music
and so far I have been enjoying it except that when i plug my bass in direct, it always distorts, I am just begining to get into recording and I'm sure this is an obviouse solution but i don't know what it is so can someone please help?
 
I would guess that the input levels on your computer are too high. Have you tried lowering the volume on your bass? Is it ONLY your bass that is distorting? Another cause could be that the effects are on (?). That's what happened to me the first time I tried recording through my Roland UA100 - the distortion effect was on and I didn't know it. Until I figured it out, I thought I had really been gyped. Well, hope this helps. If not, post another message and somebody should be able to figure this out.
