problem with mic preamp

I have a Creative Jukebox 1 hd recorder and an Audio Technica AT822 stereo mic that I use for live music recording. An audio engineer friend suggested the Reactive Sounds Boostbox mic preamp to provide a better signal.

The problem is that I cannot get a good signal with the mic preamp- it records of course, but only a very faint sound with tons of white noise (and that's at full gain). I can use the mic and HD recorder alone with decent results, but I'd really like to have the option of a mic pre.

Is there a problem with the signal or power combination of my mic and preamp?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Faint signals? No strong signal from a mic pre? Sounds very foony. Are your cables solid?

Have you tried running the mic pre into some other device?

I'm not familiar with your gear but if you are not getting a good signal from a mic pre to a recording device, something is rotten in Denmark.

Yo Kilaban:

I just re-read your post; you mentioned using a stereo mic?

Are you plugging a stereo plug into a mono input?

Could be the cause of the problema. Try a mono mic and see what happens.

The input for the preamp is 1/8'' stereo.

I got in touch with the makers of the preamp, and they said the high bias voltage from the preamp was interfering with the signal from the mic.

They offered to make a little box with "metal poly capacitors 2.2uf wired in series" that should fix the problem. Nice of them to do that, but I'll probably either take my chances without the preamp or invest in a minidisc recorder.

Reactive Sounds is the company- nice folks.

could the battery be dead? I'm not familiar with the mic so I wouldn't know.

Reactive Sounds Boost Box and AT 822

I am looking to get that same Boost Box with the AT 822 mic running into a Sharp DR7 minidisc. I got an email from RS yesterday telling me that they are aware of a problem with my AT 822 and the BB. They told me they are working on a solution. I guess your input/output box is the solution. Wonder what type of signal loss that will bring. I was wondering about using one of the Shure AK96 transformer XLR to mini cables. I wonder if that would make any difference? Thanks for any feedback or suggestions.
