Problem with MD8

Hi Folks,

I Recently got an MD8 and I'm having a very specific problem with it.

Here the deal:

I can record ok (well it seems to record ok) I get a level, the time counter ticks by and it all seems hunky dory.

When I try to playback the recording, the led above the play button flashes and nothing happens. The time counter stays still... it then seems to skip forward a few seconds, then pauses again.

Ordinary Minidiscs do play back ok. I have tried recording on multiple disks, so it ain't the media.

Anyone any ideas?

You seem to have a very simple problem of pushing the right buttons.

When you record a track on the MD8, you must put that track in the CUE mode if you're overdubbing, like doing more tracks. When you record the second or third track, you have to do the same thing.

You push the go back to where you were to start a new track.

What I think you may be missing is that you should put in a "mark" pointer?

Check out your manual; it's fairly clear on the basics of recording tracks; it gets fuzzy when it comes to some other moves you might want to try or avoid.

I use the MD8 at the moment; I will be switching to the Yam AW2816 as soon as it arrives.

If you could be a bit more specific, I might be able to help you.

Its hard to be more specific, I've described exactly what happens. I understand how the recording works, I've been through the manual and followed it to the letter.

The problem isn't that I can't hear any playback, the problem is that the machine will *not* playback, it just glitches and pauses and the play led flashes a lot. Then every so often it will run for a few frames, then glitch again.

All the while the machine is in play mode, not pauses or anything obvious. I can't decide if the problem is with the recording or with the playback, I suspect its with the recording, since I can playback normal minidiscs recorded on my portable.

Recording goes through the motions, the counter ticks by, I get a level, its just that the machine will not playback anything it has recorded.

Yo Charlie:

Do you push in the "playback" button when you want to hear what you've recorded?

Like the top of the "row" you will find the mic-gain knobs. Right below that knob is a small push button. To feed in a signal, that button is UP. To hear the track, other than CUE, that button is DOWN.

You only push these buttons DOWN when you are ALL DONE recording and want to MIX down your work to Tape, CD, whatever.

If you turn off CUE after finishing your cut, and DO NOT PUSH DOWN the playback buttons for each track, you will not hear anything.

If this doesn't work, then there must be something awry with your unit.

There are many things that could be wrong. First off you need to make sure that you have the data
disks, there are 2 types of recordable minidisks and you can easily not get the right one. I went to Guitar Center and asked for a recordable minidisk and the salesman handed me a 74 minute recordable MD, I handed it back an had to clarify I needed the 140Mb data type minidisk. Most music stores do not carry
the type of disks that the MD8 uses.
Another problem might be a faulty "transport button", the play button just might be broken, if anything
like that happens take it into an authorized repairmen and about 6 weeks later it will be fixed. The PB buttons have to be pushed into the down position for playback won't do anyone anygood until the clocks are running. Im going to assume you have regular 74 minute recordable MD meant for stereo
equipment and not the 140 Mb data disks, I remember holding a 10 pack in my hands at a department store wondering why I had been spending 13 bucks, then I remembered...ahhhhhh....whew close one.
Go to the Yamaha website and email them your problem, make sure you have the serial number handy

I think your flashing "play led" is indicating a bad disk or recording. Dunno specifics, but that's not right. This happen on lots of discs, or just one you happen to be using?

If it doesn't work on multiple discs, the only thing YOU can really do is get a MD head-cleaner type of a deal. After that, to the shop it goes. My dealer fixed my used MD-8 (bought used) for free when I noticed two of the preamps were noisy. Maybe your dealer will do the same (damn well BETTER).

I've tried multiple disks, MD-DATA and normal MD disks all behave the same way...

I've dropped it into get repaired... so I hope its something simple like the heads need realigned.

Same problem...first time in 2 years use

Turned on my machine today to play a disc on which I recorded two additional songs yesterday and the day bfore, and which had been replayed many times during the day without error...Today, alas, there is no transport...as Charlie described only worse (nil, or only fractions of a second of movement). On some other previously recorded discs I can replay for a few seconds...this one is a no-go on all Songs, though it will find each song as usual. Tried putting it in Record or Rehe mode...no difference.

All discs are SonyMD Data (8track) 140MB and used successfully many ties before over 2 years. No error messages. Play LED blinks.

Off to the dealer for a repair ...unless anyone has come up with a solution?

Hey, Stop trying to scare me into selling my MD8!!!
There are some rules I follow after owning one for a little over a year.

1)never leave it unattended with a 5 yr old girl or boy.

2)never set alchohol higher than it.

3)including other liquids not noted above

4)make sure it has proper ventilation to keep it operating below 78 degrees F.

5)store disks and recorder in low humidity areas.

6)keep everything clean, i.e. no eating over the mixer section where crumbs can fall into
the tranport buttons, pots or faders.

7)follow the poer up and down sequences.

8)never let your friends play with it with items mentioned in item number 1.

9)Murphies Law has no anidote.

machine pulling my leg it seems

And today....on turning it on, it pulled the same stunt. Turned it off and on (which didn't help yesterday) and after changing discs and a few other odds and ends I can't remember (but probably mostly verbal) it is now playing without incident! I do remember that one or two other problems in the past were solved by a good night's sleep...since guarantee is well and truly over I will wait and see how it goes.

I'm still waiting to hear from the local Yamaha tech with any info about The Problem, but The Machine was purring along on all 8 cylinders yesterday, so relax Dennis, I won't be selling mine either...and I WILL stop using it as a dinner plate...it's just that the baby does enjoy sitting on it so's he can reach the computer...but only when he's drunk.... :)
