I bought a pair of used 12s from ebay.. apparently, they got damaged during shipping.. one I think needs a motor (at certain points of the platter when stopped manually with finger, it will fail to start spinning upon release)... on the other, the arm moves away from the record.. I messed with weight and anti-skate controls, but couldnt get it to stop... anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it? And are repairs easy to make (motor replacement, plus whatever I may need to do for the other one)? The guy I bought them from told me to get in touch with Technics and become a certified dealer, this way I could save money on parts. The repair shop I took it to only told me I needed a motor in the one, said labor would be $120 each.. and parts, a rough estimate of $70 each, but didnt tell me what I needed for the table that the arm moves off the record.. for an exact estimate it'd cost $35..

Big Lex,

save up the scratch (if you ain't already got it) and let some cats who know what they are doing fix your tables. Repairs aren't too difficult, even for a first-timer, but you gotta have patience, a few tools, repair manuals (if u don;t know how they're put together), and a pretty decent analytical mind (or be an idiot savant). Tell the guy you bought your tables from to go to hell, and don't ever speak to him again. I hope you didn't pay a buttload for your tables. "Damaged in shipping..." Fuck that. I ship and receive shit all the damn time, both nationally and internationally and can count the number of times that has happened on ONE FINGER. In fact, when I got my most recent pair of 12s, the UPS guy DROPPED THEM about 5 feet (my heart stopped, but I had faith), and they were still 100% ok.

If you seriously wanna try and fix em, tell me again, and I'll walk you through best I can. You'll need to download a manual, and we'll need to make sure you got all the right tools, and THEN hope you can do the job (not a diss, just a fact).

Best advice, in my opinion, let someone who already knows how to fix them do it. Start your do-it-yourself journey aftwrewards by learning how to dissassemble and clean your wheels, recalibrate the pitch (if.when nec), and so on.

This will probably make your bargain not a bargain, but at least your 12s will outlast most of the chicks you date before you get married :D!!!

Dolo- good look on the reply.. I paid $510 plus $60 for shipping & insurance.. I should be receiving $400 from insurance claim, but its gonna take 6 weeks to get... I dont have a lot of free time nor extra $.. to find a reputable place to get them fixed could take time tho.. I have a good analytical mind and the capacity for patience(sometimes).. so I wouldnt mind taking a stab at trying to fix them myself.. thanks for your help.

Well then...

PM me with exactly what each one is doing, and under what circumstances, and we'll go from there. May have to have a phone call or two thrown in there, but if you wanna try and get it straight, I'll do the best I can to help.

<besides, if it don't work, then you'll have the cheese to get em fixed anyway, right? ;) :D >

P.S. The fucked up part is that for 600 - 650 bones  you could've bought new ones...

Damn...

Post script.
1200's at their wholesale price are $419.00 each.

Gross script...
Until about a month or two ago, one could order new 1200s for 300-350 (music factory, pro sound, etc)... I still got the old catalogs. Apparently, Technics runs pretty random specials for several months for their own hidden reasons. But that's splittin' hairs, anyway... :p ;) :D

Once BigLex buys parts it's a good possibility he'll have spent the cost of new 12s at your prices anyway, plus the hellish job of (his own) labor.

Big Lex...

Haven't got a PM from you yet, guess you ain't in a hurry to crack them nuts open. Probably not a bad thing. I can make my way around the mechanics of a table pretty ok, and for my most recent batch of modifications, I'm sending my joints off. Got better ways to spend my time. Quite frankly, unless you're kind of inclined towards electronics and such, it's a bitch of a job. Probably about 2-3 hours of work when you know what you're doing. Not trying to discourage you, just another heads up...

lol.. for the tonearm, all you need to do is to adjust the feet of yo´1210... you can spin them up and down to make the turntable go 100% horizontal.. the motor problem is another deal..

let's hope the tonearm mechanism isn't f'ed up internally...

I've seen it happen.

I second that, Chriss...

At least for shit like turntables and mixers and the like...

I would never let some cat send me some wheels via Ebay. Couldn't return em either? Not a chance...

I mean, I like to gamble like the next man, but I take my chances on things I can control more, like the super bowl, pennant races, NBA playoffs, Triple Crown contenders, acts of God, random acts of kindness, and so on...

Yo Spin,

1) I'm just a very passionate cat, you know? That particular topic he and I were back and forth about sets me off like north dallas 40. It's all gravy, though. I'm as docile as it comes, but that don't mean I can't throw them thangs...
Don't think I'm a bad guy, well, think what you want, but I'm not (such a) bad guy. And props to ol' boy for speaking his piece, at least he chose a side of the coin to bet on... But I digress...

2) Cool. Now I don't feel as stupid as I think I am most of the time...

3) Big Lex - got your PM, been out of the loop this weekend. I'ma get at you with the swift...

Yo Spin...

Props and all is cool, but on the real...
... that whole "captain must go down with the ship" routine is only good for flicks, and it's just as tired as the "chick running (in heels) and falling" bit...
<sigh>

yo biglex, also adjust your anti skater! if you've set that on zero, then it's absolutely no mystery that the tonearm keeps whamming into the centre...
