After recording to an analog four track, I was hoping to mix/master to my pc (so I could save my recordings on cd).

I've got the four-track going directly into the sound card input.

While the pc appears to be recording what's on the tape, when I play it back it is pretty much a mess of inaudible static (with a bit of music in the background).

What the heck is going on here?

Any help is most appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

sounds like you are clipping....check the meters in your recording software and make sure you arent going over 0db.....

I am putting my money on that he has a Sound Blaster soundcard and is plugged into the Mic input.

Any side bets? ;)

I agree.
Go with the Line-in.

What's that 'mic' input for anyway?

For those cheesy little PC mics. I've never undrstood what they're for. They make a Radio Shack mic look like a Neumann.

Well as it turns out, the problem was even dumber than anything you or I could have come up with.

While I was correctly using the line-in as opposed to the mic, I had neglected to disconnect the internal mic (built into the monitor?) from its input. Hence, whenever I clicked Record, I was picking up signals from both the mic and the input.

I'm an idiot.

Thanks for all your help,

Chris
