Probably a simple problem but...

In some cases, I encounter a disappearing kick when I render the final mix. I know the problem would probably be eq right? A common way my professor told me to eq bass to kick is cut each at a certain freq. so that both instruments prodominatly respond to it's own band. Something else that I read is limiting both the kick and the bass together. I'm not exactly sure why but can anyone support any of this info?
 
Limiting the bass and kick together: Make the kick louder than the bass so when the kick hits, it will push the bass out of the way.

Why don't you just add some high shelf and 3k? Give it more attack.
 
That makes sence, and just cut the mids or just lower them so that the bass builds around the kick? Sounds right.
 
Yup. I guess I should have asked the genre of music. Metal kicks sound different than hiphop kicks. Each has it's own solution.
