The Bounce to disk function works fine - however, I'm having a problem with the files. Files that don't have a lot of multi-layering play fine but files with lots of layering don't play and I get an error message saying the system doesn't know the file format.

The "bounce to disk" function NEVER works fine.

Instead, try bussing tracks and recording the bus.

Really do not understand the "layering" bit of your question

I have been a Pro Tools TDM studio for about 5 years or so, and have been using the "bounce to disk" function constantly for that entire time.

The function works perfectly for me. The only time when I ever had a problem is when I turned my CD burner on while Pro Tools was still processing the bounce - which occasionally will hang up my computer.

Can you describe EXACTLY how your system is configured and how you are bouncing (what settings, etc)?
