Hokay so i plan on (not anytime very soon) i want to upgrade hardware.

First of all, i still plan on using a native system for a while. I dont think i can afford an HD system or any other hardware accelerated DAW.

Right now im running an AMD dual core at 3.2ghz which is ok, but i want to upgrade to a quad core some time soon.
Now, i know there are a ton of these on the market for a fairly cheap price. DOes anyone know if tehre are any particular quads that seem to be more optimized for pro tools?

Also, for a native system, how will getting a better sound card help?
Im not sure what i have now, but how can upgrading the sound card make pro tools run better on my native system?

Now, onto the pro tools hardware:
I have an mbox 2 right now. First of all, is it literally impossible to just get the hardware? Wherever i look, including ebay, the hardware is always bundled with the software and that jacks the price sky high.
But anyways, if i do upgade, it is most likely going to be to a digi001, 002, or 003, rack system. I considered the mbox2 pro, but honestly i dont want to pay an extra 100-200 for just firewire.

So, what is one reliable way i can just upgrade the hardware for my set up? I already have LE, so i dont need to buy a bundle.
cmputer?

I'm not sure on specific quad core machines right now, but look on the compatibility pages on the Avid website.

When you say soundcard, I assume you mean the onboard computer one? In which case it won't affect sound/performance one iota.

The interfaces aren't that expensive. If you compare them to similar interfaces (in terms of I/O and quality) then you're getting a pretty sweet deal with Pro Tools LE included. No there's no way you can buy the interface without software except to get it second hand.

Don't get a 001; they are no longer supported and you can't use anything beyond Pro Tools 6.4 (we're currently on 8.0...).

There are more differences between the Mbox 2 and the Mbox 2 Pro than "just firewire"...

what features does an mbox2 pro have besides firewire?

They look exactly the same.
Btw, digidesign doesnt even have a section in their mbox category for pro, so im guessing its just the firewire ...

for starters...firewire which gives you more simultaneous I/O options
word clock
phono inputs
foot switch input
dual headphones

Benny has helped you out above, but seriously do some homework and read the specs on their website.

Your sentence from "Btw" onwards makes no sense. What do you actually mean?
