So, I'm running Pro Tools M-Powered 8 with an M-Audio FireWire 1814 interface. I'm trying to figure out how to use the S/PDIF I/O. When I go into the I/O settings, it looks like the S/PDIF can be an input or an output, so how do I select which one it is?
Also, is is possible to use the S/PDIF as a mono bus to use with external hardware?

at a glance it looks like the breakout cable provives two channel spdif in and two channel spdif out..

if this is the case, your protools i/o list will reflect this..

if you want to play out over spdif, select it as master/track output

if you want to record in via spdif, select in as a track's input.

as far as the mono thing goes, i'm fairly sure that you could output a mono track to spdif 1,,,,but i'm not sure how your receiving hardware would handle that.

tell us more.

Ok, so i figured out what I was doing wrong. I was just confused because I wasn't getting any sound out of the output, but I learned that it's because spdif is digital, and I was plugging it into my analog mixer. So I think i would need some kind of D/A converter.
