Pro sound equipment for bass?

My friend, a bass player, was looking at a site that described the old setup of Stephan Lessard (Dave Matthews Band). Apprently he used to use a Meyer 2x18 subwoofer cab and a Meyer MSL-2 speaker cab. Does anyone here actually do this? Would it a require a good amp modeler like the Line 6 Bass Pod? And what's the benefit of using something like this over a normal amp stack?

You want to record it or play live ? No matter...
I never use those, and don't know if it requires a good amp modeler but someone just told me to use a Fender Precision Bass as your weapon of choice and an old Bassman amp. A classic combination...

None that I can think of, especially if he is mic'd onstage anyway. I tend to a gree with a clasic solution of a decent bass and amp.
