Hey, I Currently setting up a " pro " studio, only for the use of friends record company. I'm not new to this but I do want/will appreciate any help from you guys here at Homerecording :D

I have a home studio but I must admit I do not have the best equipment. To make a long story short, we tired of running back and forth to Quad Studios (Nashville) so we're investing into our studio. I liked Quad Studio Studio c setup alot(Link) since I am the most use to that.

I was thinking of going with a High Quality audio converter then going from there, but not sure of what type of converter to get. Price rang $600-800 for a converter if necessary. I pretty much know what type of Mics,Computer, and Studio Monitors i want to go with. Also I have experienced in alot of Sequencers(sp?) but looking forward to using protools. Really don't have a budget for the whole studio, looking for all types of prices on equipment (but good deals). Studio will be used for R&B,Pop, and Rap mostly.

Since I'm wanting to go the protools route. Should I invest in the Digi002, Connect to Higher Quality converter and preamps? or will the Digi 002 not be neccessary? Serious help wanted, will take critisim.

If they use pro tools, then then the digi is all you need since that has the converters built into it. U can always add more converters via ADAT or just go the PT HD route

I'm not a Pro Tools guy, but I don't believe the 002 is ANYWHERE near an HD3 system (as they have according to your link)

yeah, the digi is nowhere near the sound quality of an HD system.
if you get decent converters, then IMO you're looking to get into seperate pieces of harwdware for nearly everything, not a interface in a box type thing.
so look into good pres, compressors, etc seperately - not something like a digi.

It's not. but the 002 will allow them to run PT and just take the projects to any studio. I'm a firm believer that if you can afford a HD rig, then you should be able to afford a recording space worthy of it. Spending 10K on recording hardware only to record hi definition background noise in your basement seems kinda silly to me. So without a nice room to record in, Digi-002 will be more the sufficient.

I also should add that if you want to run PT, you will NEED to have PT hardware (or PT approved hardware like the M powered stuff) anything that is not PT or Maudio will not work with protools at all. If you want to add premium converters, just make sure they output in a format compatible with your digi hardware

Yea, See I was wanting to Run Protools LE for now. So I was going to go with the Digi 002 or Digi 002r. But I also I wanted to make sure at the same time I get a nice high quality sound. So in the Digi 002, I should output to a nice preamp, compressor, and whatever else I might need?

I get what your saying, But i wasnt intending to use the digi for its pres and etc. Just wanted it to use protools.

what you'll need to do is get external preamps, and plug those into high quality converters, digital out into the 002r. use the 002r solely as a means of getting the signal into the computer - don't use the pres or the converters. it's not that their particularly bad, but not what i would call a "pro" piece of equipment.

Yea, Thats the type of set up I was going for but what type of converters would you recommend?

Also going another route, say I want to use Cubase. I would then with A High quality preamp, Into my Onyx, then from there a high quality converter to my Mac??

can't really suggest a high end converter, it's not really something i've
had to think about. i know Apogee are meant to make good converters..but that's about it.

about the second route, why would you even want to go into the onyx? not very familiar with it, but it seems to be a preamp and converter in one box right? and it doesn't seem to have digital inputs..

The pres and converters on the digi will be fine. If you want to go up to a pro level converter/pre, you can always find one the outputs in SPDIF or ADAT

Again, you are NOT going to get the same high quality sound out of a digi 002 in your basement as you would get at a professional studio, and, it is not going to be cheaper either.

Will it be good enough - depends on what "good enough" is to you.

:D

edit - BTW - screw studio C - Studio B just made me blow a load..........
