There are exceptions on all counts with some of the smaller "big labels", of course.
But the stereotypical "big label" (there is only one left anyway...just about) would make a platinum first run printing of just the 1k - 2k slice of pink noise in mono if they thought that with enough advertising they could convince the college crowd that it was The Next Big Thing.

They DO kind'a care about what they would be investing their $$$ in. Even f'in Brittney Spears can sing. They would sign her with a package containing concert sellouts and a cassette tape.
The quality of the actual recording is of no matter UNLESS they were thinking of just pressing your record directly.
