Hi Fonts of Knowledge,
I'm happily using Pro Audio 9.3. I've recently upgrade to an INCA88 card & breakout box (care of eBay) into a PIII, 733 MMX CPU, 128MG of SDRAM & 20Gig HDD under XP..
Would moving up to Sonar be worth the change & cost?
Cheers

Functionally speaking, Sonar has WAY MORE capabilities than Pro Audio 9 (which was what I started on by the way). I'm not sure about your system for Audio Recording though. The PIII isn't too bad, but only having 128Meg RAM. I don't see how you can do much with that. All that said, I just got my father hooked up on his PC with a Delta 44 and Sonar Home Studio 4, and his specs are PIII 800, 256MB RAM, 60GIG HD. Where he will be hurting later on will be in the processing. I applied a light EQ plug and the CPU meter shot up to like 12-15%, where as on my Pentium-M 2.0GHz system, that same plug maybe uses like 1-2%. But for just recording basic stuff, Pro Audio 9 is fine, but sonar does have a lot of workflow enhancements, as well as extra FX and other features.

Cawhite,
Thanks - I'm aware the RAM is smallish. I had to move from a pII with 252 to the "newer" comp. when I installed the Inca card. I have to get more RAM.

If you look at the system requirements for Sonar you'll see that the minimum is for a P4 1.3 ghz with 128mb RAM. You WILL have problems trying to run at the minimum level. The recommended is P4 2.8ghz or Athlon 64 2800+ with 512mb RAM. If you plan on using many plug-ins or effects you definitely need to have the recommended system as a minimum. Here is the page for the specs.

I wouldn't even think of running Sonar on that rig.

I've got a 2.4 with a gig of ram running S3 no problem.

Having two hard drives is also very important.

Also,do you need all the functionality of Sonar5?You may want Homestudio for quite a bit less $$$.

acidrock, Jaybee, cawhite12,
Thankyou one & all. I've done some research based on your reservations & Inca 88 isn't on the recommended card list. Whilst non inclusion is neither here nor there on its own, coupled with the lower rated CPU and small HDD I have some flags up indicating dangerous waters.
I'm JUST a home recordist & only my own stuff at that. I haven't learnt all there is to learn about Pro 9.3 & am producing results that are, occasionally, pleasing to me.
I haven't, that long ago, progressed from 4 track & wave recorder.
I could get a P IV for just $AU400 and build from there but I have 6 computers currently (one @ 95 running the guitar synth prog GVOX, a pII @ 98 running 9.3, a pIII running 9.3 under XP all of them dedicated to their named tasks and then a general purpose machines P IV running XP for digital restoration of LPs & the household comps doing the net & general stuff), none save the P IVs have any resale value & I just CAN'T throw stuff away so, with the above constraints & your reservations I'll sit quietly contented.
Again thanks folks.
Cheers
