Printing DX Effects while recording

I'm not sure if this is possible, but what I would like to do is use the CompressorX effect on a track while I'm recording it, and have it print to the track with the effect applied. This way the compressor will control the levels and allow me to record with a hotter signal.

Is this possible? And if so, how do I accomplish this?

To my thinking, this won't work. If the signal is going to clip, it is going to clip when it is converted from analog to digital. Since this occurs at the sound card, having a software compressor downstream is just going to compress an already clipped signal.

My suggestion would be to either get a hardware compressor, or record at 24 bit.

Is there no way to reroute the audio through an aux bus or something to make it work?

Ditto, dachay2tnr. Nah, it won't work. Lower your input gain, if needed, and compress in the mix.

If that's the case, it makes the integrated (ie comp/eq/mic-pre) gear look even better.
