If you were forced to choose between the pre's in a Yamaha AW4416, a Mackie board, an a 1970's vintage Tascam Model 5 board, which way would you go?

By strange coincidence, that is the choice I have at present.

only way to tell

do some test recordings and see which satisfies.
imho for their time the model 5 pre's i had some decent tracks with. i would at least try it. if you want to compare with top studio big boy consoles
soundclick.com/bmanning "hide Me" song used tascam 5 pre's.
listen to how well it recorded the lead breaks in the song middle.
the song "Take my love" used a multi million dollar studio.
(note: parental discretion advised on take my love song".
now compare to some diy pre's i built. "raise the flag" used a 10 dollar diy mic pre. I'm still learning. flag has had thousands of plays. difficult to tell the difference eh ??

Thanks for the input. The Mackie pre's seem pretty similar to the Yamaha pre's.

The Tascam Model 5 has intrigued me for a while. It has been up in a closet for 15 years. I just need to get it out and see how it does (and try not to drop it on my foot).

"Hide Me" rocks.

re hide me

i badly screwed up the recording of the drums on hide me.
as i was a newbie 25 yrs ago.
not the tascams fault. i was still learning at the time years ago. that song was done ages ago. i might re-record it one day.
thnx.

I love mackie vlz pro pres when they go straight out the inserts.

I prefer the mackie sound to avalon, focusrite, etc. But then I like the Manley sound so I am a bit different in my sound prefs.

What is it you like about the Mackie sound?

here is what I like about the mackie sound
  • Achieving that sound is super cheap
  • compared to the focusrite and some others, it is smooth
  • it is more than transparent enough for ALSQ
  • because it is smooth, it is also big
  • it allows the true characteristics of a mic to shine
  • it does not have a hyped sound like some boutique and expensive pres
  • Did I mention smooth? which is probably because of the unhyped sound.
