I used to have a FP10, and it was cheap, easy to use, and sounded great! Then I added an Apogee Mini-Me thru the SPDIF and used it for the clock.....sounded excellent and I got two more channels. Superb setup!!! So if you only need 8 channels.....I'd recommend a Firepod anyday.

Then eventually I needed more channels for tracking live bands, SO I was thinking just buy another Firepod. Wrong. Couldn't daisychain two of em and use the SPDIF out. Booooooo!!!

I too was looking at MOTU, but thought the pres were kinda blah. (Not quite mackie blah though) I also looked at Focusrite, but wasn't able to hear those. So I got (2) Firestudios and can still use the Mini Me thru the SPDIF. At first, I was having all sorts of drop out probs, but when Presonus came out with a new driver, all is well now. The onboard dsp is definitely non-user friendly, but once you work with it a bit, it's ok.

As another RME user. My Multiface II is rock solid. I have heard many complain about driver issues the motu stuff. Im not saying look at the multiface but look at RME. Plus they look cool.

I have used the presonus firebox. Nothing special, and I think they are ugly!

The main thing I would look at is the routing capability of the different products. I liked the Multiface because I could pass though adat channels in and out.

RME is awesome no doubt, but they are UBER expensive

Black Lion Audio does some great mods to MOTU pres and analog stages.

I use :
Presonus FireStudio Project
Presonus FaderPort
Presonus Monitor Station
Sonar Home Studio 6XL
Lenovo 8811 w/XP pro/SP3

I love it...I can't wait to daisy chain!

I've had so-so experiences with MOTU. I would not pick there gear as stuff I'd aim for, while Presonus has been great to me although I don't know if they make anything that is really "the best" anything, or if they are more value oriented like Subaru.

I would say Motu not used it but remember researching into Presonus whilst choosing my Firewire card and got put of because of the dodgy driver and some bad feedback. I think the Motu will be more reliable they have been making interfaces for longer. I ended up choosing the Alesis IO 26 which I got working and am pretty happy (some things about it really piss me off:mad:) but I know there is a better alternative, probably a Motu! But it costs £800 instead of the £300 I paid for the Alesis.. (I want 24 inputs).

I have had a presonus firestudio and I liked it,but it was nothing special. I would get motu over presonus.I have an apogee duet now and I absolutely love it. I will never get rid of it and if something happens I am sticking with apogee.

presonus

ive been using a Presonus FP10 for about a year and a half now. I have had no problem with it whatsoever and ive never noticed any significant latency. They are also super easy to use with Macs and the setup is next to nothing. However one of my buddies does have a motu unit and it is quite nice. I will most likely get a motu when the Presonus craps out on me.
