Just got it yesterday(Firepod) and it is not working properly. It detects sound but once I record it gets poppy & clicky and doesn't playback worth a crap. I've tried the latency and buffer settings to no avail. I contacted presonus support and they suggested a different firewire card.

Here is my set up:
3Gz processor
512 Memory
Dynex Firewire card (3-port ieee 1394)
Microsoft Windows XP MCE
Firepod
Cubase 5.0 VST (also tried SX with same result)

I just wanted to upgrade and got a headache instead. Is there anything else I can do besides changing the firewire? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

is this happening while trying to record only one track at once? or multiple tracks?

what kind of background processes do you have running?

do you have a wireless internet card or anything else like that activated while recording?

what kind of 3ghz processor is it? intel?

I called the Presonus folks before I placed my order for a Firebox and the told me that the firewire cards need to have a Texas Instrument chipset. The recommended a company named CoolDrives who carry these cards.
I ordered one for my laptop and it was only $29.00. I don't know if that's your problem but it's a good possibility. Here is a link to the card:

i got a Firewire card (VIA chipset i think) from Newegg.com that cost like 6 bucks and it worked flawlessly with my firepod.

i know on my old computer, which had kind of a crappy processor, the recording would get pops and stuff unless i disabled all the unnecessary background processes and my internet card and all that stuff. and i had to adjust the latency pretty high too.

after upgrading the computer (RAM, processor, etc.) i have had zero problems recording, even with other crap running in the background. my old 1.8ghz AMD would struggle, so i think a 3.0ghz intel wouldn't do too much better. just gotta make sure you trim down your programs so you're not wasting any processing power on unnecessary junk.

right click on the firepod software icon at the bottom right and change the "cpu" setting to "medium" if it isn't already, then try recording again if it was set to a different setting.

It is an intel pent.4 and and there is no wireless connections. It is the same result with a single and multiple tracks. I'm not aware of any other processes going on. Where do I go to shut them down? Will I be able to restore them? This maybe a stupid question but do I need to upgrade my sound card in the computer itself? I was under the impression that the firepod would be the new default sound card? I went ahead and ordered the Texas Instrument chipset card but I was hoping that I could get it working without it.

You tried the cpu setting thing, right? I've heard a lot of people having problems when this setting is not at medium.

I tried the CPU thing. I went ahead and ordered a different firewire card (Texas Instrument chipset) that is what FP tech support suggested to do.
It sucks because now I have to wait a few more days to use it. I am keeping my fingers crossed in hopes that it will fix the problem. Thanks for your responses guys. I'll let ya know in a couple few days if it was the card or not.

On the Presonus forum I've seen posts about it not working well with MCE. Presonus says that MCE is not a networking edition of XP and doesn't provide everything their software needs to support the hardware properly.

I really dont think that is a problem  because I run MCE with first a Firepod and now a Firestudio and a Digimax FS with no glitches what so ever, I think that people are hearing that and then they turn of certain processes and the the computer runs like shit! leave it alone do a fresh instal and you should be good to go.

The Texas Instrument chipboard has definately helped out but I am still getting dropouts from time to time. It's weird becuase I can record for a bit then sound gets distorted. The same happens in media player too. I'll change the CPU setting to low and it will play good but then it will drop out again. Switch CPU to medium and plays fine. I don't know if it a time thing or just drops out when it wants to. Once again I played with my latency settings but it still does it. I wrote presonus tech support to see if they had any suggestions of what to do.

Are you using a dedicated, separate hard drive for your audio files?
Also, did you run & install the newest firmware update & driver for the Firepod available from Presonus' website?

Are you running Windows Service Pack 2? There's a patch I needed to get so that my laptop's 1394 card would work with my Firepod. Do a search and you should find lots of information on this problem.

have you monitored your CPU usage during playback when the dropouts are occurring? maybe you have some sort of background process running thats eating up your resources? thats the only thing i can think of...

scan for spyware or viruses and stuff.
