Preamps...

i was just wondering if i should buy the art mp tube preamp for recording as well as live applications...but i don't know if the pres on my mackie sr24 (not vlz) are better? i know everybody has their taste on sound, and i would like to buy this little preamp, but don't know if its going to do me any good. Is it necessary to have an external preamp as opposed to built in mixer.

you dont need an external one. The mp will probably be slightly better, but not much over the mackies. I would save up and but an m-audio dmp3 or a studio projects vtb-1.

IMO the Tube MP makes a pretty decent bass DI, but as a mic pre, it sucks completely!

Yeah, the MP is a sucky mic pre. Decent bass DI, as mentioned. The pre's in your Mackie are better. Not great, but better than the MP.
