Hi, I use a Focusrite 6 USB preamp to record my trombone. First question; What is "headroom" Second, I use an apex 205 ribbon mic. I have to turn the preamp nearly to full. When I blow "mf" its ok sound. When its louder the sound turn out to be a little muddy, not so clear anymore. Any tips?

What is the dB volume showing in your DAW when you are recording? Chances are you've got the preamp cranked up too high (meaning you are recording at too loud a volume) and the 'muddy' sound is when you are clipping (going into the red).
Headroom means leaving so room (volume-wise) for tweaking of EQ, adding compression, etc.

In my DAW there is no sign of red or clipping. The volume is rather low when going in to the DAW. I have to turn it up a lot in my DAW to get dB 0.

Maybe its muddy all over?

Then what to do? (Its a bass trombone not a tenor trombone, maybe Im muddy:D)
