preamp vs. my sample

Ok, first off, I've been recording mainly just to aid me in composing/arranging/etc with an obviously barebones "setup".. a guitar going into my sound card by way of a sansamp... heh.. but, lately, I've been obsessing over getting the best sound possible with what I have, which is nothing! I know this has been covered plenty of times before, but my question deals with preamps. This link is just a lil sample of something-- crappy programmed drums and some sansamp tracks-- and I want to know how a preamp such as a ....crap, the name escapes me at the moment, but i'm talkin about that cheap ($80-$100???) preamp made by ART I believe.. Anyway, how would that affect my sound? I'm really not interested in buying a lot of new equipment because I'm not ...'serious' about recording and all my money goes towards this broadband connection anyways, heh.. But it's possible I might be willing to shell out some bucks if it's going to be 'worth' it.. I really don't like this 'grainy, fake' sound, for lack of better adjectives.. I've been browsing this BBS for awhile now, but it's hard to understand what everyone's talking about without actually HEARING something. And it seems that everyone here is MUCH more picky than I am (your recordings are GOOD!! heh), so its hard to evaluate everyone's input when you all might have much higher standards than I. Also, I'm interested in what a new soundcard would do for me.. I'm currently using a Riptide (Pavillion computer) and also, I'm interested in how I can make the most of what I have as far as EQ and compression etc goes using Cool Edit.. I've done reading on compression, EQ et al, but I'm still unsure where to start.. I'm just looking for something halfway decent!! If anyone has any comments at all about all of this, I'd appreciate it, and even more, if anyone has constructed a song with a 'bare bones' setup like mine, basically using only software, I'd be interested in hearing it so I know what is possible. So yeah, heh, this is a lot longer than I thought it was gonna be, but at any rate, here's a sample in all its stripped down glory (no, really, there are keyboards and melodies too! heh)! Thanks!

sounds good to me...the drums coulda came up a bit....the guitar is a little too overdominating.....since the clip is so small, you could have encoded at 192kbps instead of 96.....such a low encoding bitrate takes away alot of quality....
