Preamp, Solid State or Tube?

I tested out a Presonus Eureka (SS) and a Presonus BlueTube (toob) preamp not too long ago, and I have to say that the eureka was by far warmer and more pleasant. It was two channel, also had onboard compression, and was about 4 times as expensive. I thought it was kind of odd that a solid state unit would sound warmer than tube, but is there any obvious reason for this that I'm missing?

Proper tube circuits are much more expensive to implement than solid state circuits. Until you get into the $1000 per channel range, solid state is the way to go.

You might also note that the most sought after preamps tend to be solid state. (Neve, API, Great River, etc...)

Cheap tube circuits will sound harsh but will still cost more than a lot of warm sounding solid state stuff.
