Preamp mystery

I use a digital 8 track recorder that doesn't have phantom power. I bought a AudioBuddy preamp to supply that power so I could use a condensor mic. The problem is that when I run the mic thru the preamp, I can only turn up the gain barely so that I can hear the mic - anything more than that and I get white noise in the background. Whta is the purpose of the preamp for use with a condensor mic? Am I using it wrong? Is there an easier way to get phantom power?

Sounds like a problem with the mic....

What mic is it?

Are you running the Audio Buddy's output into a preamped channel of the digital 8-track?

The cable from the pre-amp to the recorder is XLR out from preamp and standard stereo jack into recorder.

Stereo jack into recorder? Should be mono, the Audio Buddy's output is mono.

And I ask again, is the channel you are plugging into on the recorder a channel that has a mic preamp in it?
