I just need one channel or a stereo pair of mics and I was thinking about getting a preamp to hook-up directly to my Alesis Masterlink. Do you think this will work, or will I need a mixer too?

The Masterlink has XLR inputs so I was looking at something cheap with XLR outputs like the PreSonus BLUETUBE DP. If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate them.

Masterlink is kind of overkill in my opinion but if you want a stereo recorder/cd burner in one box, it'll do it. All you'd need is a stereo pre. I'm unsure if you get 2 mono tracks or one stereo track meaning that whatever you record to the left side stays on the left side and whatever you record on the right side stays on the right. This is where a 2 channel mixer would benefit you. So, think about it and choose either a stereo pre or a 2 track mixer (that has built-in pres of course.)

I do a lot of on-location orchestral tracking - Simplistic, two track direct.

Apogee MiniMe to the Masterlink - Plain & simple.

It's not what I'd want to be editing on, but it's a fantastically easy option.
