B seems to have a bit more bite and presence, but the difference is pretty insignificant.

I guess the same can be said for everyone (not least of all me)!

Did we ever find out what preamps they were?

I'm a little disappointed...I was hoping it would be a Line Audio compared to a DAV or a Brick compaired to a M610...but cool. I'm not selling my RNP and getting a DMP3 though.

Preamp A was a FMR RNP
Preamp B was a DMP3

Take from that what you will.
People talk a heck of a lot of shit about microphone preamps is what I take from that.

Both samples had a very nice tone !
I couldn't really hear a definite difference.

That's because the samples are more than a half year old... the difference was a lot more discernable when the tracks were fresher...

Hm, I just might have to get a DMP3 now. I already have the RNP, and for what it's worth I thought the RNP was a little cleaner and more transparent compared to the DMP3, which sounded richer.

I think that A sounds best. It has more body to the sound. B has to much treble going on...
Have to read all posts now.

Is it published yet what is what?

its the never ending A versus B....then played in the public, in anything from hi-end playback systems to pc speakers.

but its no surprise the DMP3 did well, this preamp has been given the "cheap good stuff" approval here for years, from hi-end equipment owners even.
like the RNC or the infamous Shure SM57 & 58, commonly used by pro's, yet only $99!

these low priced goodies hold their own, in the world of tone.

and thank goodness for these cheap things, for some of us financial peasent recording gearheads. I think I must have skipped school the day they discussed "how to have money come flowing into your back account 101"...

So on opening two tabs in FireFox, take a listen to A and B. Pause, go back and forth listening to sections....there is subtle differences. The A seems to be a bit more boomy on the bass heavy section, while B seems to be able avoid the boominess common to acoustic guitar recordings.

Upon a second listen, I still say near zero difference and maybe "under a microscope"....if I had to purchase one, I'd say "B"....or which ever was cheaper.

I like "B" the best. It sounds to have a little more sparkle.

I found the RNP sample clearly better sounding. I can hardly believe some of you guys are comparing the DMP3 favorably to it. I need to remember this is a home recording forum more often...

Look at the poll again. It's not exactly "some of you guys are comparing the DMP3 favorably to it". That's totally fine if it doesn't twist your twinkie, but there's really no reason to put others down over it. Maybe you need to go piss with the big dogs.

Wow. That's really an easy enough thing to say after the fact.

:D

.

This was an interesting comparison but wouldn't it be a lot more informative when heard in the context of a mix? What makes one preamp sound nicer than another in a solo context might be just the thing that makes it work wrong in a mix.
