Fair enough! Hey, do another one where one is a cheap yamaha/mackie board, and the other's a $500+ preamp!

For all the fuss I expected a fuckin FMR and an API or something like that.

Well someone else can do it it's not worth the hassle. I won't be posting anything else.

Ok children calm down.

Preamp A was a FMR RNP
Preamp B was a DMP3

Take from that what you will.
Thanks for doing the test Al. Interesting comparison.

Hey Barn Owl, your a/b test was appreciated. You have to understand that we're a bunch of fuckheads. :D

I heard a slight difference between the two. Would you say that the difference is more pronounced in person?

That is interesting. I preferred preamp A during for the lower registers, it had a bigger, rounder tone. But I thought it gave up too much in the highs for the high register parts. Preamp B was nice and tinkley for those parts, but otherwise thinner. I think I want something in between!

I haven't used either preamp myself . . . and I still think the conversion hurt preamp A more than preamp B, but that is mere speculation.

I didn't hear a massive difference between the two either.

For what it's worth I prefer the rnp but the difference between them is pretty small especially when you think of the other contributing factors like room size and treatment, guitar type, string age and gage, plectrum thickness and tone achieved by the player, quality of the timing and execution of the piece, mic type, mic position.... I think in future I'll be thinking a lot more about these things and a little less about which preamp I'm using.

Yip at 0.20 on the lower section the rnp is much better.

Here's some shorter clips as .wav files.
A - RNP
B - DMP3

And the little hissy bits at the end if you want to do your thing A-end bit B-end bit

Hmmm. Glad I preferred preamp B because I've got a DMP3, dont have an RNP. Thanks for doing this!

Listening to the wavs, there is no question in my mind now, I strongly prefer preamp A.

Now that the drama is over, I listened.

I wouldn't pick one over the other. Both sound really nice...I'd be happy no matter what the equipement is.

Next time I'm in Glasgow, drinks...ok? :D

I wish I could say it was my pleasure Kevin but the negative rep kinda takes the gloss of things.

You a Will Oldham fan?
Screw negative rep....don't let that get you down. Put up with a bit of shit, and keep rolling. You'll fit in just fine then.

And my wife inists I make it over to Glasgow next time she goes, so drinks.... :D

She brought back a few bottles of Scotch from the areas she visited, and I've grown fond of some of them.... :D :D
