If you were building a gold channel for primarily vocals, what mic pre would you invest in?

An NTK is what would be used for the time being

Thanks all
Pier

That kind of money can get you into a Pendulum channel (pre/comp/EQ). The Pendulum stuff is weel built and sounds amazing. You could also get into DW Fearn preamps at that point as well. You may want to look at Neve type channel strips as well. Maybe a Chandler LTD1. That gets you a great preamp and a great EQ. There are lots of options in that price range.

On another note, I see you are in SLC. I am up in Logan. Feel free to stop by if you are ever up this way:)

If its a single gold channel and you only need a preamp, not compression or EQ, then a Neve 1073 is in that price range. That would be my choice. Probably the most used preamp in gold channel recording.

And why not get a better mic if you have that kind of $?

Yes, 1073's do have EQ on them. Neve preamps in and of themselves really aren't too expensive. Get it racked with an EQ though, and the price goes up considerably.

I second the reccomendation to give Fletcher a call at Mercenary. I would contact some of the boutique dealers who have experience with all these different high end preamps and channels. You are also in Calrec and Helios range with a budget like that. There are a lot of great options in that price range.

Yes, the 1073s have EQ but I was referring to a dedicated parametric found in a channel strip or external box EQ. Although the EQ in the 10xx series are quite remarkable.

I just knew some nappy fellow would point that out. :D

I would look at another comp before a pre, since it will have a much more dramatic effect on the final vox. Just my thoughts.

I just re-read the original thread. If you meant DIY, my apologies. I would probably recommend the Seventh Circles N72, J99 or the Hamptone kit.

Might want to take a look at the groove tubes vipre.....~$2800 :)

Thanks for all your replies guys.

No I didn’t mean physically build a pre from a kit I meant just buy one.

Anyway I am surprised that none of you mentioned Great River?

That is what I was thinking but maybe I should reconsider?

Pier

The GR is a great all around preamp, especially on guitars. Gold Vocal channel? Not in my experience. In that price range maybe a Neve Portico, the Universal Audio combo 610/1176. You might even push things up to around $1800 and try a Martech.

Others will have their preference. What was your target price?

No experience here with the Great River, but i've heard nothing but good things.

I'll plug the A-Designs MP tube mic pres. I have the 2 channel MP-2, and it's really great. I use it mainly for vox and also as a bass DI. Seems to work well with everything I've tried it on. Very clean even up to max gain. Adds something magical to the high-end, especially with vocals.

The Great River would be a great preamp. However, with the budget listed, there were other pieces that I like even better. Pendulum, DW Fearn, Chandler etc... Those are just some of the pre's and channels that I think really break into the next level up from your Great River, UA etc... Martech is another great pre. Not sure if you would really be my go to vocal pre though, but there is nothing that will sound bad through a Martech. If it deos, don't blame the Martech:D
