Pre-amps

Just a quick question on the requirement for a pre-amp.

I am almost ready to start buying my recording equipment to record my own little one-man band thing and I plan to buy a Delta 44 soundcard as part of my set-up. Now, my question is, do I need a pre-amp for it? Being totally new to this means I read some specs on the Delta 44 and couldn't work it out for myself. If so, any suggestions? My price range will be the lower end (say, one of the three cheapest options).

If it's a matter of sound quality, I'm not too fussy at the moment as I'm just getting started. Basically, can I go without a pre-amp with this soundcard? Or will it sound really terrible?
 
The Delta 44 has two mic preamps on board so you're covered as far as that goes.

WRONG!!!!!

The Delta 44 has only line-level inputs.
 
Imagine how red my face is. I miss read their info. They digressed into the 1010 specs which does have them I appologise for the disinformation.

unless you are talking about the Delta 1010LT???
 
Hmmmm, so I'll ask again....

If I get the Delta 44 soundcard, are pre-amps 100% required or can I get away without using them? Given that I'm not looking for the best quality for my first attempt at PC recording, will I get decent results without pre-amps?

If you want to use microphones or any instrument signals that are not line level (e.g., direct guitar or bass), then YES, you need at least one preamp.

If you want to simultaneously record from four mics into all four line inputs of the Delta, then you would need four mic preamps.

Most recording mixers have at least a couple of mic preamps in them, and it would likely be cheaper to get a small mixer than it would to buy four separate preamps -- not to mention all the other things a mixer will add to the flexibility of your rig.
