Hello,

I want to record a guitar thru my sound card directly, Using guitar rig 4.
But i have a problem that my sound card doesn't have a gain knob,
And i'm interested buying The Maudio DMP3 Preamp.
And i wanted to ask you guys, How this Preamp really works, Is this thing has only gain knob or its also working as a compressor, I mean that it keeps the gain equally, that when you play the guitar kinda quietly it keeps the gain equally as the same when you stroke the guitar kinda strong.

Sorry if you cant understand my problem, Or my english :p
Im really new in this stuff so, Please help :)
Thanks, Eclipse maniac :)

If you are going to spend any money, don't get a preamp. For the same amount of money, invest in an audio interface.

You use the interface instead of a soundcard and it has all the preamplification required. You plug your guitar into the interface and then this will feed directly into your computer either with usb or firewire and will give you a much better signal than any soundcard.

Do some searching for audio interfaces and you will find all kinds of information. I'm sure folks here will chime in with some recommendations.

Okay, Thank you very much.
That was really helpful. And i really need that someone will recommend me something.
Thanks again.

Well i just thought about that, and i have the Maudio delta 1010 sound card, and that a really good sound card for me .
So i think im going to buy the dmp3 preamp some day when ill got the money,
But still, can someone answer my question please.

Big difference, yes the 1010 is an audio interface and you don't need another one

OK, as for preamp, the DMP3 is a great preamp, but it does not act as a compressor. The gain basically increases the signal output strength. So if you were to plug your guitar into it and went from zero to full, the guitar would get louder not compressed.

This preamp is typically used for microphones. I think the 1010 should give you the best signal to go into your computer for use with Guitar rig.

Does the 1010 have an instrument level input? if not, a decent DI box should be purchased, stat.

You will still need to check if the inputs on the soundcard have a high impedance input for instruments with passive pickups. If not, then you will need to get a DI as well. You typically need input impedance in the hundreds of kilo-ohms to mega-ohm.
