I don't have much money but I'd rather spend my rent than sound like crap.

You might want to check into this setup:

An Aphex 107 pre (you can find them on ebay for about $125) and a Rode NT1A (around $199 new).

For a tight budget, they sound pretty good...

I have a used Aphex 207 dual channel Tube pre I'd probably be willing to sell for 200 + shipping maybe. If you want it let me know... I gotta wait til monday for something to arrive. ;P

about the cheapest combo i know of and dont knock it till youve tried it.
for about 90 bucks.
a cad gxl or mca sp 1 LDC into a behringer mic 100 preamp.
may not be a million dollar royer ssl approach.
but it will save that rent check and get down some decent tracks
for very cheap. if you know how to engineer and mic placement
from what ive heard from people i trust.

OH MY!!! (read that in a surprised voice),

Manning1, you used the "B" word (Behringer) and not in a derogatory way.
:D

johnny. i know !
but you know - what i keep an open mind about these things.
the guy has a limited budget and i dont know anything cheaper to lay tracks with.
and ive also seen positive reviews on both units i suggested.
if he had the money i'd prolly suggest a rane ms1b and a cad m179 as examples of millions of combos or a hardy plus a 414, but i maintain he should be able to do a song with what i suggested.

well actually johnny i do know something cheaper. practically free.
a cheap dynamic into a relations donated old cassette deck mic pre(some are quite ok) feeding the sound card. ive actually done this in the past to fool some elite friends of mine who think they can tell the difference between high and low end.
after i fooled with the track and filtering in the multitrack software some actually preferred the track done with the cass dek mic pre.
its all in the way you clean up your tracks if done using lo end equipment.
what i suggested is certainly better than the cassette deck trick.

My first set up was a SM57 and a Fostex x-26 4-track. Back then I didn't even know what a mic pre was or that it was a good idea to use one. I recorded with the above gear and was happy.

Later I bought the ART Tube MP pre for around $90. I see that you can now get them for $50.
