hey guys, i had a quick question about the way i'm using my monitors...

right now, my active monitors are being fed from the Firepod, and i leave the volume control on the monitors up somewhere between 1/2 to 3/4 up, then i control the actual volume i hear with the Main Level knob on the Firepod. is this the porper way to do it? or should i leave the Main Level knob up and control volume from the monitors?

also, i sometimes tend to forget to actually shut off the monitors when i'm done...is this potentially doing harm to the internal amplifiers by leaving them on for extended periods of time (like days on end)? should i turn off the monitors every time when they're not in use? or is it OK to just leave them on? i ask because i often leave my computer running for extended periods also, and was told that it was a bit healthier to just let the computer go to "sleep" mode rather than power off and reboot every time.

I never shut my monitors off they've been on approximately 3 years with the exception of power outages. I see no harm. However I am a lazy motherfucker who just refuses to go running behind the monitors for the power switch every time there not in use.

Leaving the volume up on the monitors and adjusting from the firepod is the right way to do it. I always turn my monitors off when im done using them, mainly because the amps get pretty hot and I dont think its good to leave them like that. I put them and my controller on one switch so its easy to turn on and off.

I agree; I inserted a mixer in the signal chain to adjust volume, add FX etc. and power them down when not in use.

I guess I should consider my studio a lab because I have been experimenting with leaving mine on for months at a time for a couple of years now. I only shut them off when I go on vacation or something for I too am a lazy motherfucker.
I will report when they stop working.

I use a wall strip as the ON/OFF switch, the wall strip would be easier to replace than the internal switches on the monitors.

Similar here...I have an on/off switch on the front of my power distribution panel in the rack.

My monitors have a "sleep" mode. If they don't get audio for a certain period of time they turn off. When they get a signal they automatically turn on again. It's a handy feature. The monitors are the Mackie HR824 and KRK V4.
