Power to the MoBo

One Hit Wonder
I think I know the answer to this one, but let me try it anyway.

I recently had a motherboard crap out on me just 14 months old. This got me to thinking. Mobo's generally have some type of power going to them even when the computer is shut down. (I deduced this all on my own because I still saw a light on when the computer was shut down :) ). However, the power outlet that I have my computer plugged into is controlled by a wall switch. Since this switch also controls the room light, I generally turn it off when leaving the room.

Obviously, because of this I am somewhat regularly powering and unpowering the mobo (usually at least once a day).

Could this have been aiding and abetting an early death???

No, that wouldn't have killed your motherboard. I unplug my computer whenever I'm not using it, which happens 2 or 3 times a day. Same thing as what your doing only I pull the plug out of the wall, you open the circuit with a switch.

The only purpose of the this off-mode standby is for things like turning your machine on by pressing a key on the keyboard, remotely waking your machine up via another computer or network etc.

Motherboards will just 'die'. One of those facts of life.

Thanks, Emeric. I figured it was designed to allow for a quick power on thing, but I also thought it might not be helpful to frequently turn it on and off. Glad to know it doesn't, since it would have been a PITA to have to rearrange things.

also!

are you sure it was the motherboard? perhaps the power supply was defective and all the on/off switching just made it go out. have you tried another power supply on it? You may have done this and know for sure, I'm just not sure the extent of the problem and what you know for sure..just thought i'd make that suggestion.

Didn't try another power supply. But I replaced the motherboard last Monday and so far all seems to be OK.
