I'm looking for a power amp to match up with my 6ohm Yorkville Ysm1's

Cheap of course,

any suggestions???

ahhhh, anyone?

can I use a 4 ohm amp?
can I use an 8 ohm amp?

6 ohm speakers seem kinda odd.

can't find a 6ohm amp! Do I need to?

You will be fine as long as the amp is solid state (not tube)

Do not forget some of the better HI-FI power amps i.e. Rotel etc. these make perfect monitor amps.
They can be got pretty cheap on Ebay as people have got rid of them to buy AV amps.
Most of them will work perfectly happily into 2 ohms although this is not usually documented.

I've been using a Mackie 1400i with my YSM1's for about 5 years now. Always sounds great, and I've always gotten great home mixes when I want them. It may sound like overkill, but there's plenty of power in there and I never have to worry about distortion.

check out the hafler TA1600 for $250.

what I've heard is (and I could be wrong), if you go any cheaper your mixes will suffer.

I would look into a Hafler or a used Bryston. Nothing against the Mackie 1400i because in their price range for a PA amp, they aren't too bad. However, the Mackie 1400 series especially has a very slow reaction that won't give you any punch or ultra clarity and speed. Almost sounds like it has a built in overeasy compressor (and yes I have checked numerous times on the 20 or so Mackie 1400x amps I have used to make sure that the limiter was not engaged).

I use andold Sansui 1970s era hi-fi amp. I've looked at some other solutions but each time the $$ start getting sort of high. The old Pioneer silver face gear from the 1970s should also be considered.

The stock answer for this question is to get on eBay and to grab a used Crown D75.

You can get the Hafler TA1600 for $200. For me, that's the best choice for budget/quality.
